Women’s Basketball Tussle With Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team opened the CAA road portion of the schedule Friday evening in Philadelphia. The most anticipated matchup of the season commenced inside Daskalakis Athletic Center where the Blue Hens (8-6, 1-2 CAA) suffered a 73-57 setback to the hosts Drexel (11-3, 3-0 CAA).
Drexel began the game on an 8-0 spurt before Kharis Idom got the Blue Hens going with a three-pointer and Michelle Ojo scored on a layup after Delaware forced a shot-clock violation. After a couple of baskets by Drexel, Ojo kept up her hot quarter with back-to-back layups to cut the lead to 12-9 with 2:57 left. Drexel, however, scored the last seven points of the period to take a 10-point lead.
Delaware turned things around in the second period shooting an impressive 62.5 percent from the field on a 10-16 shooting, headlined by Ojo and Jewel Smalls combining for 12 points. Smalls connected from deep to ignite a 7-0 Blue Hen run to pull within single digits, 41-33, with 30 seconds left. The Dragons pushed its lead back up to 10, thanks to Jasmine Valentine last second shot, sending the 43-33 game into the break.
The Blue Hens trailed by as many as eight points after Idom knocked down a jumper with 7:51 in the third period to cut the deficit to 45-37. The Dragons then outscored Delaware 8-6 in the remaining 5:44 of the quarter to close out with the 60-45 advantage.
Drexel remained in the driver's seat scoring 15 of the final quarter's 27 points to cruise to a 73-57 victory.
Ojo paced Delaware with 14 points (7-10 FG) and six rebounds while Klarke Sconiers poured in 11 points (5-7 FG).
Keishana Washington led the way with 30 points (13-26 FG) while Maura Hendrixson dished out a game-high 13 assists.
Delaware shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the field, 30.0 percent (6-20) from the beyond the arc, and 100 percent (3-3) from the free throw line. Drexel connected on 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-16) from three-point territory, and 50.0 percent (6-12) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Dragons in rebounds (34-30), bench points (24-20), points in the paint (30-24), and blocks (3-1).

WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware continues its road trip to North Carolina next weekend Friday, Jan. 13 and Sunday, Jan. 15. The Blue Hens will face Elon on Friday at 7 p.m. inside Schar Center in Elon, N.C. and then head to new CAA foe North Carolina A&T for Sunday's matchup against the Aggies at 2 p.m. inside Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.
