NEWARK, Del. -Â We are six days away from the University of Delaware spirit squad heading to Orlando, Fla. to compete at the 2023 UCA Nationals running Jan. 13-15 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Before heading down to the Sunshine State, the Blue Hens are in full preparation mode while still setting time aside to get out to the Blue Hen community and showcase the Blue & Gold pride.
The Blue Hens showcased their Small Coed Game Day, All Girl Traditional and Coed Traditional national routines on Friday, Jan. 6, in front of the 90+ kids at the Boys & Girls Club, a full circle moment for Nikki Sherrill who is a B&G alum. The squad also gave out UD swag and provided mentorship to the eager youngsters about the importance of gaining a college education.
"It was so great being able to go into the Newark community to share our Blue Hen Pride and showcase our nationals routines," said head coach Ryan Blanford. "We pride ourselves on being role models for the younger generation especially in regards to athletics and academics. We hope the 90 plus kids who watched us have been inspired to one day pursue a college education."
"It was so great to be able to come back to the place where I used to spend days after school and summer camp," said Sherrill. "When I went they always said "great futures start here" and supported me along the way, helping with work and other things. As a Division I athlete, it was great to come back and perform for the younger children and I hope I can continue to inspire them and others."
