Women’s Basketball Battles Charleston

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team continued its hosting duties on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon when welcoming Charleston (10-13, 5-8 CAA) inside Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (13-10, 6-6 CAA) suffered a 90-56 home setback to the Cougars, stopping their win streak to two games.
After trailing 29-9 through the first quarter of play, Delaware turned things around in the second quarter. Nakiyah Mays-Prince connected from deep at the 8:59 mark to kickstart a much-needed 7-0 spurt, trimming the deficit to 13 points, 29-16. Charleston pushed the lead back up to 18 points after Jada Logan scored four-straight points, 38-20, with 3:10 remaining. The Blue Hens continued it claw their way back into the game in the final putting together a much-needed 9-4 run to close out the quarter and head into the break down 13, 42-29.
Charleston remained in the driver's seat throughout the second half outscoring the Blue Hens 48-27 to cruise to the 90-56 final.
Makayla Pippin paced Delaware with 18 points (7-14 FG, 4-5 FT) and seven rebounds (five offensive). Tara Cousins followed with 11 points (4-8 FG, 3-5 3PT), six rebounds, four assist and three steals. Jewel Smalls chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Anika McGarity led the way with 32 points (11-19 FG, 10-15 3PT) to go along with three steals while Logan poured in 29 points (11-29 FG, 5-11 3PT), grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Delaware shot 33.9 percent (20-59) from the field, 20.7 percent (6-29) from beyond the arc, and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free throw line. Charleston connected on 45.9 percent (34-74) from the field, 51.4 percent (17-33) from three-point territory, and 55.6 percent (5-9) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Cougars in points off turnovers (14-10), bench points (16-8), fastbreak points (8-5), and blocks (5-1).

WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will hit the road to the Big Apple next Friday, Feb. 17 and face Hofstra inside David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. at 7 p.m. The Blue Hens will return back to the First State and host Drexel in a Senior Day battle inside Bob Carpenter Center at 2 p.m.
