Quartet of Double-Digit Scorers Lead Women’s Basketball To Regular-Season Sweep of Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team traveled to Hempstead, N.Y. for a showdown against Hofstra (9-15, 3-10 CAA) Friday evening inside David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Blue Hens (14-10, 7-6 CAA) completed the regular-season sweep by capturing the 65-54 road victory over the Pride. With the win, Delaware extended its winning streak against Hofstra to 16 games.
After being all tied up at 10 after the opening quarter of play, both offenses came to life in the second. Nakiyah Mays-Prince and Makayla Pippin combined for 13 points on 6-7 shooting in the period, but Hofstra barely edged out the Blue Hens to take a 29-28 lead into halftime. Klarke Sconiers gave the Blue Hens momentum midway through the quarter by converting an and-one opportunity, cutting a six-point Hofstra lead in half at the 3:25 mark.
Emma Von Essen knocked down a triple 53 seconds into the third quarter for Hofstra to build the four-point lead, 32-28. The rookie Mays-Prince poured in a pair of freebies which ignited a dominating 20-8 run. Tara Cousins caught fire in the third, scoring 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting. Sconers scored on back-to-back possessions to push Delaware's lead to 48-40 before Hofstra scored the quarters last five points to cut Delaware's lead to 48-45 entering the fourth.
Hofstra scored on a pair of free throws to begin the final frame, but Delaware scored seven consecutive points, highlighted by two Jewel Smalls' three-pointers, to push the lead up to 11. Delaware's defense locked down Hofstra, holding the Pride without a point for nearly six and a half minutes, and without a field goal for over seven minutes to seal the game away.
Sconiers led the way with 16 points on an efficient 6-7 shooting and perfect from the free throw line (4-4) to go along with seven rebounds and four blocks. Mays-Prince followed with 13 points (5-7 FG) and six assists. Pippin chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds while Cousins poured in 10 points and tied her career-best seven rebounds. Smalls pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Sorelle Ineza had the most points for Hofstra with 17 (6-19 FG), while Rosi Nicholson scored 11 (4-7 FG).
Delaware shot 46.8 percent (22-47) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from the beyond the arc, and 78.9 percent (15-20) from the free throw line. Hofstra connected on 28.3 percent (17-60) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-23) from three-point territory, and 75.0 percent (15-20) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed Hofstra in rebounds (45-28), assists (12-8), blocks (4-1), second chance points (14-0), bench points (32-20), and points in the paint (26-18). Delaware improves to 70-12 all-time against Hofstra, and have now won 16 in a row against The Pride.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Blue Hens return to campus Sunday, Feb. 19 for a Senior Day CAA battle against Drexel inside Bob Carpenter Center. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.
