Women’s Basketball Rumbles With Drexel on Senior Day

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to campus Sunday afternoon and welcomed CAA foe Drexel inside Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (14-11, 7-7 CAA) came up short against Drexel (19-7, 11-4) suffering a 67-55 home setback.
Prior to tip off, the Blue Hen senior class of Demi Burdick, Kharis Idom, Wyatt Martin, Makayla Pippin, Jewel Smalls and Mar Tejedor were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to the University of Delaware women's basketball program in front of the season-best adoring crowd of 2,716.
The first quarter proved to be an epic battle between the two teams in front of the rocking Bob Carpenter Center. After Drexel's leading scorer Keishana Washington knocked down a jumper 12 seconds into the game, Rebecca Demeke and Tara Cousins scored Delaware's next five points to take the early 5-2 lead. Drexel took the 8-5 lead with 6:15 left and then Klarke Sconiers drained a jumper to ignite a much needed 12-5 Blue Hen spurt to claim the 17-13 lead. The Dragons answered back with a 6-2 run of its own to take the narrow two point lead into the second quarter, 20-18.
Drexel saw its lead balloon to 10 points thanks to Chloe Hodges' jumper at the 3:12 mark, 32-22. The Blue Hens were determined to keep this close and went on score seven unanswered points, highlighted by Sconiers' three-point play to trim the deficit to three points, 32-29, heading into the break.
The Dragons outscored the Blue Hens 22-14 coming out the half to extend their lead to 11 points, 54-43, gearing up for the final quarter. Delaware opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to pull within four, 54-50, with 8:01 left. Drexel remained in the driver's seat in the final 7:31 to close out the game on a 13-5 run to settle the 67-55.
Cousins paced Delaware with 13 points, five rebounds and two steals. Demeke and Sconiers (two blocks) followed with nine points while Jewel Smalls pulled down 10 rebounds.
Washington led all scorers with 40 points (11-26 FG, 15-17 FT) to go with four rebounds and three assists while Maura Hendrixson chipped in seven rebounds and seven assists.
Delaware shot 33.9 percent (19-56) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-14) from the beyond the arc, and 57.1 percent (12-21) from the free throw line. Drexel connected on 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 210.0 percent (3-15) from three-point territory, and 75.0 percent (24-32) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed Drexel in blocks (4-3), second chance points (9-7), bench points (20-14), and fast break points (12-10).

WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will hit the road Boston, Mass. next Friday, Feb. 24 and face Northeastern inside Cabot Center at 7 p.m and head back to the Big Apple to play against new CAA foe Stony Brook Sunday, Feb. 26 inside Island Federal Arena in Stony Brook, N.Y. at 2 p.m.
