No. 13/14/14 Men's Lacrosse Defeats St. John's in Home Opener

NEWARK, Del. –No. 13/14/14 Delaware men's lacrosse picked up its first home win of the season 16-9 against St. John's (0-2) on Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 3-0 on the season and are 20-4 at Delaware Stadium since 2019.
After a close first half that saw Delaware lead 6-5, the Blue Hens opened the second half on a 6-1 run. In the third period, freshman attackman Finn Morgan got things started with back-to-back goals in the 34th minute. Tye Kurtz and JP Ward joined the scoring frenzy with beautiful goals in the 36th and 44th minutes, respectively, while and Clay Miller and Jason Kolar closed the run with goals in the 43rd and 45th minutes, respectively.
St. John's wouldn't go away quietly as it cut the Blue Hens' lead to 12-8 in the fourth. However, the Blue Hens finished the game on a 4-1 spurt with goals coming off the hands of Ward, Tye Kurtz, Jason Seiter, and Cam Acchione to settle the 16-9 final.
Individually, the Blue Hens were led by Tye Kurtz, who finished with five goals and one assist. Ward dished out a career-high five assists to go along with two goals. Morgan posted his first-career hat trick in his first-career collegiate start. Jason Kolar had his second multi-goal performance of the season finishing two goals while Clay Miller had three assists to go with his first goal of the season.
Roland Hockenberry set a new career high for faceoff wins with 20 and a .800 faceoff percentage. Matt Kilkeary had seven saves and picked up his third decision on the season.
As a team, the Blue Hens outshot the Red Storm 52-38, including a 32-16 shots-on-goal advantage. UD was 21-of-27 on faceoffs to the Red Storms 6-of-27 and 20-of-23 on clear attempts.
Delaware's homestand continues with a non-conference matchup against Villanova on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. from Delaware Stadium.
