Late-Inning Explosion Propels Baseball to Victory at Stetson
2/24/2023 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
Both sides traded scoreless first two innings before Delaware got runners to second and third in the third frame after a Brett Lesher single and Dan Covino double.
Joey Loynd drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
Stetson answered back in the fourth, but the tie was short-lived, as in the fifth, Delaware loaded the bases for Loynd, who cleared them with a three-run double to make it 4-1. Loynd's hit chased Stetson starter Austin Amaral.
Eli Atiya pitched well in his second start of the season, allowing just one run on four hits and fanning five in four innings pitched, earning the win. He was relieved by Joey Silan, who pitched a scoreless fifth.
The offense exploded further in the sixth inning. Andrew Amato drew a leadoff walk before Jake Dunion reached on a bunt single. Bryce Greenly brought both of them home with a three-run shot to left center, his second homer of the season.
The Hens were not done in that frame. Two more runs came across on a wild pitch and a throwing error, which was followed by Andrew Amato and Dunion trading doubles to extend the lead to 11. All in all, it was an eight-run sixth inning.
Stetson added two runs in the seventh on a home run.
Loynd recorded his fifth RBI of the evening in the seventh, making it back-to-back games with five RBI, becoming the first Delaware player to do so since at least 2018.
Stetson scratched across a fourth run in the seventh, but Delaware responded by scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Covino knocked his fourth hit of the game in the eighth inning on a two-run single, making it 16-4 Blue Hens. Jackson Tyer followed with his first career RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Gabe Dermott extended the lead to 15 with his first hit of the season, a two-RBI double in the eighth.
The Hatters added four one-out runs in the ninth, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Hens won 19-8.
18 of Delaware's 19 runs came after the fifth inning. It was the second consecutive game with 19 or more runs and 15 or more hits.
Tomorrow's first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
