Men's Swimming & Diving Finishes Second At CAA Conference Championships

HAMPTON, Va. - Delaware's men's swimming & diving program finished in second place at the 2023 CAA Conference Championships after the final day of competition on Saturday. The Blue Hens' second-place finish ties their best finish at the conference championships all-time, equaling last season's runner-up finish.
Gavin Currie highlighted Delaware during the meet's fourth day. He won the 200 back conference title for the second consecutive season, joining Ryan Roberts (2011, 2012) as the only Delaware swimmers to do so. His championship time was clocked at 1:42.35, a new all-time CAA, CAA Championship Meet, and Delaware program record. It was Currie's sixth medal of the week, and his third gold medal. His time was also an NCAA B-Cut mark. DJ Fechtman earned a bronze medal in the event, finishing with a time of 1:45.38.
Andrew Taylor also shined for Delaware, finishing in second place in the 1650 free with a time of 15:25.31, a new UD record and an NCAA B-Cut mark. Taylor also set the program record in the 1000 free with a time of 9:17.87. Kevin Lewke finished in seventh place in the 1650 free with a time of 15:48.65, while Smolders placed 11th at 15:58.46.
Jack Hattery recorded a silver medal finish as well, finishing in second place in the 200 fly with a B-Cut time of 1:45.24. Simeon Sabev finished in sixth with a time of 1:48.80.
Three Blue Hens finished in the top six in the 200 breast, led by Evan Frick finishing in third place (1:59.14). Toni Sabev placed fifth (1:59.55) and Gibson placed sixth (2:00.24).
In the 100 free, Miguel Vasquez finished in ninth place (44.67), Ryan Polino finished in 14th (45.11), and Luke Rautzhan placed 16th (46.03).
The 400 free relay team of Vasquez, Toni Sabev, Matvei Namakonov, and Polino finished in fourth place with a time of 2:58.45.
Delaware finished only behind UNCW (890 points), and came from behind to finish as the runner-up after finishing in third at the end of the first three days. They finished ahead of Towson (577.5), Drexel (507.5), William & Mary (424.5), and Monmouth (241.5). Head coach Pablo Marmolejo was named men's swimming co-coach of the year, his second career CAA Coach of the Year honor (women's, 2020), while diving coach Ryan Hunt was named co-coach of the year, his second ever CAA Diving Coach of the Year and his first a Delaware.
