Women’s Basketball Holds Off Stony Brook, 53-51

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team headed back to the Big Apple Sunday afternoon to face new CAA foe Stony Brook (17-10, 11-5 CAA) inside Island Federal Arena in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Blue Hens (15-12, 8-8 CAA) captured a necessary 53-51 road victory to return to .500 in conference play while snapping the Seawolves four-game winning streak.
Delaware opened the game on a 8-0 run capped by a steal on one end by Tara Cousins and an and-one on the other. Stony Brook responded with a 7-0 run to make it a one-point game with 4:44 remaining, but the Blue Hen defense held the Seawolves without a point for the rest of the quarter. Delaware held Stony Brook to 3-16 shooting in the opening quarter and 1-10 from beyond the arc.
Jewel Smalls highlighted the second quarter, as she went a perfect 3-3 from three-point range as Delaware outscored the Seawolves 17-15 to take a 29-22 halftime lead. Delaware maintained a multiple-possession lead for the entirety of the quarter, with the closest Stony Brook coming was six. The Blue Hens again ended the quarter strong defensively, allowing just two points to the Seawolves after the 4:53 mark.
The Blue Hens saw its lead grow to 10 after Small made a three, pushing the score to 36-26. Stony Brook battled back to bring the lead down to four with 3:01 remaining, but Delaware's defense once again ended the quarter by holding the Seawolves without any points for the remainder of the third.
Delaware immediately began the fourth by going up 44-36, but a scoring-drought allowed Stony Brook to cut the lead to five with just over six-and-a-half minutes left. A layup by Sconiers and two free throws by Makayla Pippin pushed the lead to nine with 3:40 left. A late comeback by Stony Brook saw them five points in seven seconds to cut the lead down to two. Sconiers put up the finishing touches with a layup with 30 seconds left, Delaware held on to settle the 53-51 final.
Sconiers led Delaware with 20 points (8-15 FG), eight of which coming in the fourth quarter. Smalls made five three-pointers to tally 15 points. Kharis Idom had six assists while Pippin had six rebounds.
Sharese Pittman had a team-high 13 points (5-13 FG) for the Seawolves while Shamarla King and Daishai Almond had 11 points each.
Delaware shot 32.8 percent (19-58) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-19) from beyond the arc, and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. Stony Brook connected on 28.4 percent (19-67) from the field, 16.0 percent (4-25) from three-point territory, and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe. Delaware outplayed Stony Brook in assists (13-11), blocks (9-4), bench points (6-5), and fastbreak points (3-2), and both teams played evenly in points in the paint (22) and steals (7). Delaware held Stony Brook to a season-low in total points and field goal percentage.

WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will return to the First State Thursday, Mar. 2 for its home finale against North Carolina A&T inside Bob Carpenter Center at 11 a.m. as part of the Education Day. The Blue Hens will then close out the regular-season on the road in Virginia and face new CAA foe Hampton inside Convocation Center at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 4.
