Women’s Basketball Prevails In Sold Out Overtime Thriller Against North Carolina A&T

NEWARK, Del. - The last one is always the best one. In front of a season-best and sold out crowd of adoring 4,423 youngsters and fans alike inside Bob Carpenter Center Thursday morning, the University of Delaware women's basketball team put on an amazing show in its home finale. The Blue Hens (16-12, 9-8 CAA) welcomed North Carolina A&T (17-11, 11-6 CAA) and captured the thrilling 79-75 overtime victory over the Aggies to complete the regular season sweep. Delaware overcame a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, their largest comeback since Jan. 2, 2011 against Hofstra and the second time this season they have overcome a deficit of at least 15 points (Elon on Jan. 13).
Klarke Sconiers laid in two as part of the Blue Hens 8-2 run in the opening 3:22 as the arena erupted with pure excitement. North Carolina A&T made it a one possession game, 8-6, then Kharis Idom took it upon herself to welcome herself back to Newark with a triple that kicked started a 10-2 spurt, building the 10-point lead (18-8) with 1:59 left. The Aggies scored five-unanswered points to pull within single digits before Sconiers' layup gave Delaware the 20-13 lead to close out the quarter.
A&T made it a one point game, 26-25, with 5:01 left in the second stanza. Rebecca Demeke connected from downtown to push the Blue Hens lead up to four, 29-25. The Aggies respond with a 10-4 run of their own to take the 35-33 lead into the break.
North Carolina A&T saw its lead balloon to 10 points (43-33) with 7:45 showing on the third-quarter clock. The Blue Hens started to chip away at the deficit and made it a three-point game, 45-42, thanks to Michelle Ojo's layup starting things off at the 7:10 mark. The Aggies remained in the driver's seat throughout the quarter outscoring the Blue Hens 13-3, extending its lead to 13 points (58-45) going into the final quarter of play.
Trailing by 16 points with 8:43 left, the sheer determination of the Blue Hens shined throughout the remainder of the fourth. The three-point specialist Jewel Smalls knocked down a critical triple as part of Delaware's 12-2 run, making it a two possession game with 3:07 left to play, 64-60. It was raining threes in the Bob as Tara Cousins and Idom hit back-to-back threes to knot up the game at 66 with 1:35 left. With the scoreboard showing 69-68 with eight seconds left in favor of the Aggies, Sconiers draws a foul and knocks down the game-tying freebie to send the 69-all game into overtime.
Tied at 75 with 58 seconds left in overtime, Cousins and Smalls continued force A&T to foul and poured in four freebies to settle the 79-75 final.

Makayla Pippin followed with 13 points (6-8 FG), six rebounds and a steal. Smalls chipped in with 12 points (6-7 FT), eight rebounds and four assists as Idom poured in 11 points dished out a season-best seven assists and nabbed three steals.
The Aggies were led by Jordyn Dorsey's 20 points (8-15 FG) while Jazmin Harris scored 11 points (5-13 FG).
Delaware shot 41.5 percent (27-65) from the field, 24.0 percent (6-25) from beyond the arc and 70.4 percent (19-27) from the free throw line. N.C A&T connected on 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field, 33.0 percent (6-18) from three-point territory and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe. Delaware outplayed N.C. A&T in rebounds (43-36), assists (18-15), blocks (5-0), points off turnovers (22-21), and fastbreak points (18-15).
