ELON, N.C. – Three late-inning homers proved to be the difference as Delaware (9-13, 2-3 CAA) lost its third consecutive game, falling 8-3 at the hands of Elon (15-8, 7-1) on Saturday.
Starter Bryce Greenly worked through trouble in the first three innings, striking out three batters.
The Hens struck first, as with two runners on, Aidan Kane doubled to put the Hens up 2-0 in the fourth.
Reliever Carter Welch kept the opposition off the board until the sixth inning, allowing a pair of home runs and giving the Phoenix its first lead.
Elon added two more home runs in the seventh to stretch the advantage to six runs.
In the top of the ninth, Joey Loynd doubled, and after he was moved to third on a groundout, Kane drove him in on an infield single for his third run batted in of the day. Despite this, the Hens could not fight back further, dropping the second game of the series 8-3.
Loynd recorded three hits in the effort, while JJ Freeman, Kane and Jake Dunion joined him with multiple hits. Bryce Greenly, Owen Margolis and Reece Bolton each recorded scoreless pitching outings.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
