NEWARK, Del. – Delaware red-shirt senior defender Owen Grant reached 100 career caused turnovers as the Blue Hens defeated UMBC 17-11 on Tuesday at Delaware Stadium.
Grant, who owns the program record for caused turnovers in a career, is one of two active players in the country, along with Notre Dame's Chris Conlin, to reach 100 career caused turnovers.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve their record to 4-2, and handed UMBC its first loss of the season. The Retrievers are 4-1.
After the Blue Hens got out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, the Retrievers went on a 4-1 run to take a 6-5 lead. Their lead wouldn't last long as Jason Kolar and Tye Kurtz responded with goals at the 26th and 28th minutes of the second quarter.
Moments later, after UMBC tied the game at 7-7, Mike Robinson broke the tie with a man-up goal with 28-seconds left in the first half. Robinson's goal sparked a 7-0 Blue Hens run for the entire third quarter. Nick Jessen got the run started with a goal a minute into the third quarter, and finished with a JP Ward goal with 18 seconds left in the quarter.
Despite three unanswered goals by the Retrievers, the Blue Hens shut the door on any potential comeback with goals from OJ Morris and Brooks Bond. Both scored their first goals of their Blue Hen careers.
Individually, the Blue Hens were led by Kurtz, who had four goals and added two assists. Kurtz has scored at least three goals in every game this season, and leads the Colonial Athletic Association with 25. Cam Acchione and Nick Jessen each had two goals on the day. Ward led in assists with three, and added a goal.
Defensively, Grant had four of the Blue Hens eight caused turnovers. Matt Kilkeary picked up the win for the Blue Hens with six saves. He's now 4-2 on the season.
As a team, the Blue Hens out-shot the Retrievers 47-35, including a 30-17 shots-on-goal advantage. Delaware had 17 turnovers to UMBC's 19, and won 19 faceoffs to UMBC's 12.
The Blue Hens open conference play, and close out their five-game home stand against Monmouth on Saturday, March 11 against Monmouth.
