With the win, the Blue Hens improve their record to 10-3 overall, and remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0. Head Coach Ben DeLuca secures his third straight 10+ win season, and his fourth over the last five years. He's had six total seasons with 10 or more wins dating back to his time at Cornell. Drexel falls to 7-5 overall, and 4-2 on the season.
Both teams traded goals back-and-fourth for the majority of the first half as neither team was able to hold a lead larger than one goal. The Blue Hens would break this streak with a man-up goal from Cam Acchione with 2 and a half minutes to play in the first half.
Despite the two-goal lead, the Dragons scored three of the first four goals to start the second half to tie the game 8-8.
After the Dragons tied the game, the Blue Hens went on a 6-1 run to take their largest lead of the game at 14-9. The run was started by Mike Robinson, cashing in on his first goal of the game with under 11 minutes in the third quarter. Acchione finished the run with his second goal of the game with 12 and a half minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Jason Seiter, Robinson, JP Ward, and Tye Kurtz added goals during the run.
The Dragons wouldn't go down without a fight after the Blue Hens run, and cut their lead to 15-12 with under seven minutes to play. However, a string of goals by Riar Schell, Jason Kolar, and Kurtz shut down any possibility of a Drexel comeback.
Leading the way on offense for the Blue Hens was Kolar, who scored a career high four goals, and added one assists. He's scored seven goals over the last two games. The Blue Hens also had multi-goal games from Ward, Kurtz, Robinson, Acchione, and Schell. For Schell, it was his first multi-goal performance of his career. Defensively, Owen Grant had five of the Blue Hens 13 caused turnovers. He's now at 30 on the season, and is five away from tying his own program record for caused turnovers in a season with 35. Matt Kilkeary was credited with the decision. He had eight saves, and boasts a 10-3 record in net.
The Blue Hens close regular season action with a road game against Towson on Saturday, April 29 at noon.
