NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware men's lacrosse head coach Ben DeLuca and his staff are excited to announce the hiring of Mark Bieda as the Blue Hens new full-time assistant coach for the 2024 season.
Bieda, a Bridgewater, N.J. native, returns to Delaware where he was a four-year starting midfielder for the Blue Hens. Following graduation from UD in May of 2022, Bieda served as a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan for the 2023 season. With the Wolverines, Bieda worked as the face-off and wing coach for the No. 8-ranked face-off unit in the country. During his time in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines captured a Big 10 Conference Championship and put together Michigan's first winning season since 2018.
"Our program is grateful and excited to welcome Mark back home to his alma mater. A former two-time captain, Mark is one of the fiercest competitors and most respected leaders we've had during our time here at Delaware," said DeLuca. "He is someone that understands our program's standards and lives our values. Mark's character, work ethic, and leadership had a tremendous impact on the success of our program as a student-athlete, and we are excited to have him build on that as a member of our coaching staff."
Bieda was dynamic in the Hens midfield for four years from 2018 to 2022. He was named team captain twice during his UD tenure and helped lead the Blue & Gold to the 2022 CAA championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Blue Hens advanced to the quarterfinals that year before falling to Cornell, the eventual 2022 runners-up. Over his career, Bieda appeared in 41 contests, making 31 starts. He tallied 36 career goals with 43 assists for 79-career points. He put up a .670 shot on goal percentage with four game-winning goals. Throughout his career, Bieda garnered numerous accolades including CAA Player of the Week, Second-Team All-CAA, and earning a spot on the 2022 USILA Senior All-Star team.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Mark back to Newark," said Associate Head Coach Matt Rewkowski. "In his time at UD as a player, Mark was both an outstanding leader and the consummate teammate."He has always possessed a great understanding of the game and the natural ability to connect with those around him. Those qualities, along with his passion for Blue Hens lacrosse, make him a great addition to our coaching staff. I'm excited to work alongside Mark and for our players to benefit from his influence."
