Men's Soccer Falls to Stony Brook for its First Loss of the Season

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team came up short in a hard fought battle against the Seawolves on Saturday, September 16.
The 3-2 loss dropped the Blue Hens overall record to 5-1-1, and 1-1-1 in conference play.
COACHES QUOTE
- "We had good moments in the game, but weren't quite sharp enough to be able to sustain them. Because of that, we continued to give a dangerous Stony Brook team a foothold in the game and they took their chances well," said Head Coach Tommy McMenemy. "I think with more sharpness in our passing and some better decision making, we could have been on the other side of the result. It's a great learning opportunity for our very young team, and I'm excited to see how they respond on Tuesday night."
- "It was a tough game in challenging conditions. We fought hard and had some good moments but they were simply better at both ends of the field. All our focus shifts to next Tuesday," said forward Sam Donnellan.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Donnellan and Carlos Fernandez each tallied two points with a goal.
- Eddie DeMarco recorded two saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook snuck a header past DeMarco in the fourth minute of the game to take the 1-0 lead.
- The Blue Hens were quick to answer as Donnellan scored off a penalty kick just three minutes later.
- A handball in the box by the Seawolves gave Delaware another opportunity to score. Fernandez fired one past the Stony Brook goalkeeper on the second penalty kick of the game, putting the Hens up 2-1 in the 36th minute.
- The Seawolves tied the game shortly after the start of the second half.
- Delaware attempted to regain the lead but the game remained 2-2 up until Stony Brook scored once more in the 82nd minute.
- Despite Delaware's best efforts, the Seawolves maintained the 3-2 lead for the remainder of the game.
GAME NOTES
- The Blue Hens recorded six shots on goal.
UP NEXT
Delaware returns to action on Tuesday evening with a home matchup against Le Moyne.
