TOWSON, Md. - University of Delaware volleyball was defeated by Towson in five, hard-fought sets (18-25, 25-23, 29-27, 14-25, 11-15) on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Madelyn Grunza had 14 kills and hit .357.
Lani Mason had 16 kills and 10 digs.
Ezgi Basaranlar recorded 41 assists and nine digs.
Kirah Johnson had 9 kills and had four blocks.
Savannah Seemans had eight kills and 17 digs.
Asia Murray had four kills and five blocks.
Amelia Painter had 14 digs.
Eileen Gex had 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

Towson immediately went up 9-1, then gradually increased their lead to 21-11.
Delaware put a run together towards the end of the set and cut the lead to 24-18 before Towson finished it off.
Grunza had three kills in the first set.

SECOND SET

Delaware used the momentum from the end of the first set to jump out to a 12-8 lead in the second.
Towson scored three straight points to take an 18-17 lead, but the Blue Hens responded with their own 3-0 run to retake the lead. Grunza and Seemans recorded the final two kills after Towson tied it at 23 to secure the set two win.
Mason had five kills in the set, while Basaranlar had nine digs.

THIRD SET

Set three featured 19 ties and seven lead changes, with Delaware eventually prevailing 27-29.
Both teams exchanged 3-0 runs early on, with Delaware coming out on top, 11-9, after a Seemans' ace.
With the Blue Hens up 19-16, Towson rattled off four-straight kills to take a one-point lead and held a 24-23 lead.
Grunza tied the set up with a kill and an ace, but Towson scored two-straight to lead 26-25. Delaware scored four of the next points, which included three kills by Mason, to take a 2-1 lead.
Mason had six kills in the set, with Basaranlar adding 13 assists. Grunza contributed with four kills.

FOURTH SET

Both squads were tied at eight early in the set. Towson then took an 18-13 lead, then scored the final seven points of the set to force a decisive set.
Johnson had three kills in the fourth.

FIFTH SET

Delaware took a 5-3 lead after blocks by Murray and Grunza, but Towson scored the next four points to lead by two.
Delaware cut a four-point lead down to 11-9, but the Tigers scored the match's final two points to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

GAME NOTES

Basaranlar had at least 40 digs for the second straight game and the fifth time this season. She now has 3,296 assists for her career.
Grunza tied her career-high in kills with 14, her second straight 14-kill game. She also had 14 against Tarleton State on Sept. 1.
Mason recorded her third straight double-double and her seventh of the season.
Seemans recorded her second straight game with at least 15 digs.
Painter's 14 digs were a new season-best, and her most since having 16 on Nov. 6, 2022, against William & Mary.
Gex recorded double-digit digs for the 11th time this season.

Up Next: Delaware returns back home to play Charleston on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, both at 1 p.m.
