Cherisier’s Career Day Shines As Women’s Basketball Storms Past Towson, 73-59

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball closed out January's CAA slate in front of 1,284 fans inside Bob Carpenter Center when they welcomed Towson Sunday afternoon. The Blue Hens (7-12, 3-4 CAA) snapped its four-game losing woes by capturing a much-needed 73-59 victory over the Tigers. With the win, Delaware stopped Towson's (11-7, 3-4 CAA) winning streak at three games.

The Blue Hens will open February's CAA slate in Philadelphia on Friday, Feb. 2, against Drexel inside Daskalakis Athletic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast simultaneously on NBC Philadelphia and FloHoops.

- Cherisier led all scorers with a new career high of 21 points (5-of-12 FG, 11-of-12 FT), grabbed seven rebounds, five of which were offensive, and was credited with an assist.
- Klarke Sconiers joined Cherisier by scoring in double figures with 17 points (4-of-7 FG, 9-of-10 FT) while grabbing three rebounds and had a block.
- Chloe Wilson tied her career high with 15 rebounds, and added six points. She also led the Blue Hens in assists with three.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 37 percent (21-of-57) from the field, 24 percent (4-of-17) from three-point territory and 79 percent (27-of-34) from the free-throw line, which tied the season high for free throws made in a game.
- The Blue Hens had a +15 rebound margin, (51-36), and scored 18 second-chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold also finished the day with eight assists, two blocks, eight steals, 11 fastbreak points, 27 bench points and scored nine points off of 12 Tigers turnovers.
First Quarter: Towson 16, Delaware 10
- A pair of Cherisier free throws broke the game's 2:12 scoring ice to give Delaware the early 2-0 lead.
- Towson's Alexia Nelson knocked down a jumper to tie the game up at two before Cherisier drained another pair of freebies for the Blue Hens, 4-2.
- The Tigers would respond with five-straight points to take the 7-4 lead advantage with 4:44 left to play.
- The Blue Hens kept the game close as Sconiers' two free throws made it a one-possession game, 9-7, with 2:48 left.
- Towson would close out the quarter on a 7-3 run to take the 16-10 advantage into the second frame.
- 46 seconds into the second quarter, Nakiyah Mays-Prince laid in two to ignite a much-needed 15-6 Blue Hen run to regain the brief two-point lead, 24-22, with 2:22 left.
- The run was highlighted by Cherisier's eight points as she ended the half leading all Delaware scorers with 12 points, two points shy from her career-best.
- With 2:08 showing on the second-quarter clock, the Tigers remained poised and closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run to retake the 29-26 lead into the break.
- Towson saw its lead grow to seven, 37-30, with 7:12 remaining in the third frame.
- Sconiers (six points) and Wilson (two points) teamed up for Delaware's 8-2 scoring spurt to pull within one, 39-38, forcing the Tigers to call timeout at the 4:02 mark.
- The Tigers built a six-point cushion, 44-38, before a trio of triples coming off the hands of Rebecca Demeke and Grace Sundback kickstarted a 13-5 run for the Blue Hens to regain the 51-49 lead heading into the final quarter.
- The final period was raining Blue & Gold as the Blue Hens outscored the Tigers 22-10 to settle the 73-59 final.
- Towson was able to take its final lead of the afternoon at the 8:22 mark, thanks to Patricia Anumgba's three-pointer, 55-53.
- Delaware responded immediately with a dominating 20-4 run to secure its biggest lead of the night (14 points) and the victory.
- India Johnston paced Towson with 19 points and four assists. Anumgba followed with 14 points and three assists while Nelson chipped in 11 points. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas led the Tigers in rebounds with 10.
- 16 of the Blue Hens 26 first-half points came from the free throw line. As a unit, Delaware shot 80 percent from the line (16-20).
- This was Wilson's fourth game pulling down double-digit rebounds. The last time Wilson grabbed 15 boards was two years ago at Fairleigh Dickinson in a game against Wagner on Jan. 17, 2022.
- This was Cherisier's first 20+ point performance of her career.
- The last time UD won after trailing at the half was back on March 2, 2023 when the Blue Hens defeated North Carolina A&T by a score of 79-75 in overtime.
- As a unit, this is the third time this season that Delaware has pulled down 50+ rebounds. The last time the Blue Hens secured that many boards was against Lehigh (53) earlier this season on Nov. 14, 2023.
- The next time Delaware and Towson will meet in a regular-season matchup is on Sunday, Feb. 25 inside SECU Arena in Towson, Md. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast simultaneously on Monumental Sports Network and FloHoops.
