Volleyball Returns Home With Straight-Set Victory Over Northeastern

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball picked up a big win over Northeastern on Saturday in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-9) to pull into third place in the CAA standings. Delaware's conference record sits at 6-3 and they dropped Northeastern to 5-4.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTSÂ
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss and Anna Logan Gillens each had match-highs in kills with 11. Whitfield-Moss hit .562 and had four blocks, and Gillens hit .381.
- Raina Hughes turned in another solid performance for Delaware, recording seven kills on a .438 hitting percentage and three blocks.
- Lily Rogers had 34 assists, eight digs, two blocks, and three kills.Â
- Kirah Johnson recorded nine kills, hit .300, and had four blocks.
- Savannah Seemans had two aces to go with four kills and six digs.
- Cadence Nguyen had a match-high 15 digs.Â
- Hannah Wright also had two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Northeastern controlled much of the first set, leading 10-5 early. Delaware scored five of the next six points to cut the deficit to one, with Whitfield-Moss recording two kills and a block during the stretch and Hughes and Rogers adding kills.Â
- Delaware took their first lead on a Rogers kill at 16-15, but the score was tied at 20. The Blue Hens scored the final five points of the set, with Johnson picking up two blocks and two kills during the last stretch.Â
- Whitfield-Moss and Johnson had four kills and Rogers had 13 assists in the first set. Nguyen had six digs, and Johnson had three blocks.Â
SECOND SET
- The second set featured just one tie, at 2-2 - as Delaware never trailed. A kill by Gillens put the Hens up 11-4 before the Huskies were able to cut the lead down to four.
- Four of the next five points went to Delaware, with three of them coming on blocks. An ace by Seemans put Delaare up 20-11 and Whitfield-Moss ended the set with a kill.Â
- Delaware held Northeastern to an exact .000 hitting percentage, and they hit .348 with six blocks. Gillens and Johnson each had three kills.Â
- With the match tied 3-3, Delaware scored six of the next seven points to go up by five. Northeastern scored the next point before Delaware ripped off 10 points in a row, their best scoring run of the season, to lead 19-5. Whitfield-Moss and Gillens each had four kills in the run.Â
- Two late kills by Hughes put Delaware up 23-8 before Gillens finished off the match with a kill.Â
- Gillens had six kills in the set, while Whitfield-Moss had five. Rogers picked up 14 assists and Nguyen had seven digs.
MATCH NOTES
- Delaware has won six straight matches against Northeastern, and have outscored them 15-2 in set victories over that span.Â
- Delaware has won 11 of their last 12 matches at home dating back to last season.Â
- Seemans' career kill total sits at 993. She also is at 187 career aces.Â
- Johnson now is at 381 career blocks - moving ahead of Niecy Taylor for eighth in program history.Â
- Rogers now sits at 1,362 career assists. She has averaged 11.03 assists per set over Delaware's last eight matches.Â
- Hughes continued her successful stretch of play, as she's recorded 43 kills and a .391Â hitting percentage her her last five matches.
- Whitfield-Moss had her first career game and at least 10 kills and a .500-or better hitting percentage. Â
- Nguyen has had at least 15 digs in three-straight matches.Â
- Wright has recorded multiple aces in two straight games for the fourth-time in her career. She had three such occasions in 2022.Â
