Volleyball Completes Huge Weekend Sweep of Hofstra, Pulls Into First Place Tie in CAA

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -Â University of Delaware volleyball defeated Hofstra in five sets (25-22, 19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-12) to finish off a weekend sweep of The Pride. The win pulled Delaware in a four-way tie for first place in the CAA standings with Towson, The College of Charleston, and Hofstra at 9-3.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kirah Johnson had a team-best tying 15 kills and four blocks.
- Anna Logan Gillens also had 15 kills.
- Lily Rogers had 50 assists, five kills, two aces, and four digs.Â
- Savannah Seemans recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 blocks.
- Raina Hughes hit .444 with nine kills and four blocks.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had eight kills and six blocks.Â
- Cadence Nguyen had a team-high 15 digs..
- Hannah Wright had 14 digs.Â
- Taylor Holly had two aces.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Hofstra went ahead 6-3 early, but four straight points, capped by an ace from Nguyen put Delaware up for the first time. UD then had a stretch of scoring five of the next six points, with Gillens picking up back-to-back kills, to take a 13-9 lead.Â
- With UD leading 16-13, The Pride scored six of the next seven points to take a 19-17 lead. Delaware scored back-to-back points to tie it at 20, then scored the set's last four points after trailing by two to come-from-behind to win the set. Rogers had an ace to put UD ahead 23-22.Â
- Rogers had 15 assists in the set, tying a season-high last done in the third set against William & Mary on Oct. 12. It was her third 15-assist set of the season (also done in the first set against Campbell on Sept. 22). Gillens had five kills as Delaware hit .302 as a team. Nguyen had seven digs.Â
SET TWO
- Hofstra led for all of set two. Kills by Gillens and Hughes, an ace by Holly, and a block from Whitfield-Moss helped Delaware cut their deficit to 10-7, but UD never got closer.Â
- Rogers had nine assists and Johnson had four kills.
SET THREE
- Hofstra took their largest lead of the set at 9-6, but a kill and block by Hughes evened the score at 10. Hofstra again took a three-point lead, but UD scored five of the next six points to go up 15-14.
- The score was tied at 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19, but Delaware used a 4-0 spurt on kills by Whitfield-Moss, Hughes, and Johnson and a block from Johnson to take their largest lead at 23-20. Hofstra evened the score at 24, but kills by Seemans and Gillens clinched the set to put Delaware up 2-1.Â
- Whitfield-Moss led the way with four kills, and Rogers had 10 assists.Â
- Hofstra led 7-4 early, their largest of the set, but kills by Hughes and Seemans helped tie the score at eight. UD went ahead after blocks by Gillens and Whitfield-Moss at 11-10.Â
- Similarly to set three, the middle of set four featured ties at 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. Hofstra pulled away after going up 22-19 and forced a decisive fifth set.Â
- Hughes, Johnson, and Gillens each had three kills, and Rogers had 10 assists.
- Delaware used a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the last set at 4-3, and they would never trail after. A kill by Gillens and an ace by Holly put UD up 6-4, and an error and kill by Johnson gave Delaware an 8-5 lead.
- Hofstra rallied to tie the score at 10, but two errors by Hofstra and kills by Rogers, Gillens, and Whitfield-Moss helped Delaware complete the sweep.
- Johnson had three kills in the set.Â
MATCH NOTES
- Delaware has won back-to-back five-set matches for the first time since Nov. 17 and 18 during the CAA Conference Tournament against Charleston and William & Mary.Â
- Rogers had her second straight 50-assist match and third this season. It's the first time she's had back-to-back 50 assist matches in her career. She is at 753 for the season and 1,505 for her career.
- Rogers also became the first Delaware player with back-to-back 50 assist matches since Ezgi Basaranlar on Nov 5 and 6, 2022 against William & Mary.Â
- For the first time in Kirah Johnson's and Anna Logan Gillens' career, they both had back-to-back matches with at least 15 kills.Â
- Johnson is also at 397 career blocks after recording four today.
- Seemans has had double-digit kills in nine of her last 10 matches and in 15 matches this season. She also recorded her sixth double-double of the year.Â
- Hughes is hitting .366 over Delaware's last eight matches.Â
- Wright recorded double-digit digs in back-to-back matches for the first time in her career.Â
- Delaware is 15-2 in the month of October of the last two seasons.Â
