Cross Country Competes at 2024 CAA Championships

ELON, N.C. – The University of Delaware cross country team took to the Elon Cross Country Course on Friday morning for the 2024 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Cross Country Championships. The Blue Hens faced off against the best teams in the conference and finished in seventh place out of 13 teams, highlighted by the top five finishers placing among the top 50 runners.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware's team performance was strong, racking up 175 points to secure a seventh place finish.
- Gabriella Gait-Smith set the pace for the Blue Hens, finishing first among her teammates with a time of 21:34.30, earning her a finish of 18th overall.
- Ella Peterson followed closely behind, with a time of 22:27.60, which was good for 35th place.
- Kelly Lynch (22:29.30, 37th), Erin McGoey (22:42.70, 45th), and Leah Clear (personal-best, 22:44.80, 47th) rounded out Delaware's scoring five.
- Marissa Dailey contributed to the effort with a time of 22:51.80, finishing in 54th place.
- Other notable performances included Kadence Dumas (23:00.40, 59th), Lauren Thomas (23:01.90, 61st), Nina Sgambelluri (23:22.10, 70th) Danielle Eshelman (23:27.00, 73rd), and Stephanie Herrera (23:46.40, 81st).
RACE NOTES
- Northeastern was crowned CAA champions for the first time in program and conference history, finishing with a score of 44, dethroning the host Elon.
- The Huskies' Abigail Hassman claimed the individual medalist title for the third-straight year with a time of 20:08.10.
- The top seven teams were William & Mary (54), Elon (63), Stony Brook (106), Charleston (149), Monmouth (174) and Delaware, in that order.
- This is the final CAA cross country championship that the Blue Hens will participate in, with the program-best finish taking place in 2019 (second place).
UP NEXT
The Blue Hens will return to competition on Friday, Nov. 15, at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, hosted by Penn State in State College, Pa., on the Blue & White Courses.
