Field Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller in NCAA Tournament First Round Against Fairfield

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of Delaware field hockey forced overtime in the waning seconds of regulation and scored the golden goal to defeat Fairfield 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The Blue Hens advance to Friday's second round against No. 1 North Carolina at 11 a.m. in Chapel Hill.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

For the second-consecutive game, Lulu Fulton scored a golden goal to keep the Hens' season alive.
Iris Bekker scored the equalizer in the fourth quarter.
Valentina Martorell, Janne Stoetzer, and Noelle Sabbagh all recorded an assist.
Cecile van Eijck (12-9) recorded the win with two saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Stags struck first during the 20^th minute of play. Fairfield utilized a penalty corner and found the back of the cage with a stick touch in front.
With 16 seconds remaining in regulation, UD scored off a penalty corner with Bekker converting a shot off the keeper's pads.
Into double overtime, Fulton stretched out for a shot that squeaked past the keeper for the game winner.

GAME NOTES

The win was Delaware's 11^th all-time in the NCAA Tournament and eighth under head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof.
The Hens remain undefeated against Fairfield, moving their record to 5-0.
