Men’s Basketball Nearly Erases 16-Point Deficit Against Bryant

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's basketball team nearly erased a 16-point deficit Monday night as it narrowly slipped to Bryant, 85-84, in the first annual SL24: UnLocke the Light Mental Health Awareness game. The Hens are now 2-2, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1.

The Blue Hens will travel to the 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off hosted at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut to take on Vermont and Yale on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware was a perfect 11-of-11 in the first half from the free throw line and would finish with a season-best 90.5 percent (19-of-21).
- John Camden set career marks in points (27), field goals made (10), field goal attempts (16), steals (2), and three-pointers (four).
- Erik Timko pulled down double-digit rebounds for the first time in his career, grabbing 10 boards to go with seven points.
- Cavan Reilly finished the day with a season-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
- Niels Lane set a career-best with nine free throws made en route to 13 points.
- Reilly started the game with gusto as he stole Bryant's jump ball possession to earn the first field goal of the evening. The Hens led the Bulldogs 14-10 at the first media timeout, having made their last four shots. The Bulldogs nipped the lead following the break with an 8-0 run over 2:03 to hold an 18-14 advantage. At the under-eight media timeout, the Blue & Gold held a 32-27 lead, making four of their last five attempts. With under five until the half, Bryant broke through with a 7-0 run over 1:17 featuring five-straight makes to take a 39-36 lead. The Bulldogs ended the half with a 46-44 lead.
- The second half kicked off with a 7-0 Bryant run in 1:43, leading to a UD timeout. Bryant would go up by as many as 16 before the Hens cut the gap to 71-61 with 11:42 left in the second half. Delaware held Bryant without a field goal for nearly three minutes going into the media stoppage. With 4:14 to go, the Bulldogs' lead was down to six. The Hens cut it to two with 2:02 remaining, using a 6-0 run over a 1:45 stretch. Camden got the bucket and a foul with 25 ticks remaining to bring the Blue & Gold to within one at 85-84. Delaware held the ball for the final possession but could not overcome the deficit.
- This marks the first game of the season in which the Hens trailed at the half.
