Women’s Basketball Clashes with Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team kicked off its three-game road stretch Sunday afternoon with a matchup against Providence inside Alumni Hall. Despite a trio of Blue Hens scoring in double figures, Delaware (1-4) came up short in a 60-53 battle with the Friars (3-3).

First Quarter: Delaware 16, Providence 13
Delaware travels to New Orleans for the Big Easy Classic, a two-day event kicking off against Tarleton State on Friday, Nov. 29, inside the Alario Center. Tipoff is set for 6:45 p.m. ET/5:45 p.m. CT.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Ande'a Cherisier led the Blue Hens with 12 points and added four rebounds.
- Tara Cousins and Alieghya Bartholomew each contributed 11 points. Cousins also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists, while Bartholomew added two boards.
- Delaware shot 36.7% (18-49) from the field, 35.3% (6-17) from three-point range, and an impressive 84.6% (11-13) from the free-throw line.
- The Blue Hens won the rebounding battle 33-29, including 10 offensive rebounds that led to six second-chance points.
- Defensively, Delaware tallied six blocks to frustrate Providence's attack.
First Quarter: Delaware 16, Providence 13
- Cousins opened the game with a three-pointer just 20 seconds in, sparking an early 8-2 Delaware run.
- Providence trimmed the lead to three after Grace Efosa converted a three-point play at the 4:14 mark (8-5).
- Cousins and Ella Wanzer knocked down back-to-back triples, extending Delaware's advantage to nine (14-5) with 2:53 left.
- The Friars responded with an 8-2 run to close the quarter, cutting Delaware's lead to 16-13.
- Delaware maintained control early in the second quarter, building its lead to eight (25-17) on a Bartholomew three-pointer at the 5:55 mark.
- Providence countered with a dominant 12-0 run to take a 28-25 lead into halftime.
- The Friars opened the second half with a seven-point edge (32-25) at the 8:37 mark.
- A pair of free throws by Chloe Wilson ignited a critical 9-4 Delaware run, narrowing the deficit to two (36-34) with 5:18 remaining.
- Mackayla Scarlett's pull-up jumper extended Providence's lead back to seven (41-34) at the 4:00 mark.
- Delaware responded with a 7-3 burst, capped by Cherisier's second-chance layup, closing the gap to 44-41 heading into the final quarter.
- Providence surged ahead in the fourth, building its largest lead of the game—12 points—with 6:42 left on the clock.
- The Blue Hens showed resilience, mounting a 9-3 run fueled by four key points from Cousins.
- Despite their effort, Delaware couldn't complete the comeback, as Scarlett's late three-pointer secured the 60-53 victory for the Friars.
- Providence now leads the all-time series 3-2, snapping Delaware's two-game winning streak against the Friars.
- The Blue Hens hold a 15-15 all-time record against current BIG EAST opponents, with the most wins coming against Villanova (6-3).
