Volleyball Defeats Stony Brook in Straight Sets for Sixth Consecutive Win

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Stony Brook in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. It was the Blue Hens' sixth straight victory, the longest active streak in the CAA, and helps UD keep pace at the top of the conference standings.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Anna Logan Gillens had a match-best 15 kills and hit an efficient .364.
- Kirah Johnson hit .500 with 11 kills and three blocks.
- Lily Rogers had 38 assists, three aces, two blocks, and three digs.
- Raina Hughes and Gha'Nate Whitfield-Moss had six kills each. Hughes added three blocks and Whitfield-Moss had two.
- Savannah Seemans had five kills, eight digs, and an ace.
- Taylor Holly had a team-high 12 digs.
- Hannah Wright had eight digs and an ace.
- Cadence Nguyen had five digs and an ace.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Back-to-back kills by Gillens forced an early timeout by Stony Brook at 6-2. Rogers then had two straight aces to put UD up 10-5.
- After SBU cut the lead to 12-11, Delaware scored seven of the next eight points to take an 18-12 lead. Stony Brook got the lead down to 19-17, but both teams exchanged a pair of points each until Delaware came out on top 25-21.
- Gillens had five kills in the set, and Rogers had nine assists and three aces.
SET TWO
- The Seawolves took an early 7-5 lead, but two kills by Gillens and one by Whitfield-Moss put UD back in the lead. Another kill by each gave Delaware a 10-8 lead.
- UD used a 3-0 spurt to go ahead 23-17 late. A kill by Hughes and a block by Hughes and Johnson clinched a 2-0 lead for the Blue Hens.
- Delaware hit .375 in the set, and held Stony Brook to a .143 hitting percentage. Gillens had six kills in the set, and Rogers had a season-best for a set 17 assists. It was the most by a Delaware player since Ezgi Basaranlar had 18 in last year's season finale against Elon.
SET THREE
- Set three was the closest of the day with 10 ties and seven lead changes. Stony Brook had their largest lead of the set at 15-13, but Delaware scored five consecutive points to go ahead for good at 18-15. Seemans had an ace and a kill during the run, while Rogers and Johnson had a block and Gillens had a kill.
- Back-to-back kills from Whitfield-Moss ignited the crowd to put UD up 23-19, and an error and a kill by Hughes finished off the match.
- Gillens and Johnson had four kills each, and Rogers had 11 assists. Holly had five digs.
MATCH NOTES
- Delaware has won five matches in a row and now 9-1 at home this season.
- Delaware is 14-1 in their last 15 home matches dating back to last season.
- Gillens has double-digit kills in six straight matches and seven of her last eight. Since last weekend, she is averaging 4.06 kills per st.
- Johnson has recorded double-digit kills in five straight matches. Today was also her second game this season in which she hit at least .500 with at least 10 kills, also done on Sept. 22 against Campbell.
- Rogers had averaged 11.08 assists per set over her last 10 matches.
- Seemans recorded her 189th career ace.
- Wright has had at least one ace in a career-best five straight matches.
- Holly recorded double-digit digs in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
