Volleyball Wins Seventh Straight Game In Sweep Over Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Hampton in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-8) on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024. It was the Blue Hens' seventh straight victory, tied for the longest active streak in the CAA, and helps UD keep pace at the top of the conference standings with four teams tied for the top spot. Delaware has also won nine consecutive sets.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had a match-high 11 kills and hit .353 with three blocks.
- Kirah Johnson recorded 10 kills with a .692 hitting percentage and had four blocks.
- Raina Hughes had a .538 hitting percentage with seven kills and three blocks.
- Lily Rogers had 34 assists, five aes, three kills, four digs, and a block.
- Anna Logan Gilles had seven kills.
- Savannah Seemans recorded six kills, nine, digs, and an ace.
- Cadence Nguyen had a match-high 18 digs and added an ace.
- Hannah Wright also had an ace and recorded 13 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Hampton had it largest lead of the set at 8-6, but UD scored 12 of the next 14 points, including a 7-0 run, to go up 18-10. Johnson had three kills over the stretch and Seemans and Gillens each had two.
- Kills by Rogers, Whitfield-Moss, and Gillens put the Blue Hens up 21-13, and Hughes recorded two kills down the stretch to help finish off the set.
- Delaware hit .325 in the opening set and held Hampton to a .094 hitting percentage. Seemans had five kills and Rogers had 12 assists, while Nguyen had six digs.
SET TWO
- Delaware came out of the second set hot, going up 10-5 with Rogers recording two aces.
- Four-straight points on kills by Whitifield-Moss and Hughes, an ace by Nguyen, and a Hampton error put Delaware up 21-13. Johnson had two kills to help cap off the second and put Delaware up 2-0.
- Whitfield-Moss had four kills and Rogers had 10 assists. Nguyen added six more kills.
SET THREE
- UD scored seven of the first eight points and 10 of the first 12 to take control of the set early. A 5-0 run that featured an ace from Wright and kills from Johnson and Seemans put Delaware up 15-4.
- Delaware then used a 6-0 run to take a 21-5 lead. Whitfield-Moss and Gillens had two kills in the run and Rogers had one, and Johnson had an ace. Taylor Holly had an ace to end the match.
- Whitfield-Moss had five kills in the set, and Rogers had 10 assists.
MATCH NOTES
- Johnson had her seventh straight match with at least three total blocks. She now has 413 total career blocks.
- Hughes has recorded at least three blocks in five straight matches.
- Seemans recorded her 190th career ace, fifth most in program history.
- Rogers tied her career high in aces with five, also done on Oct. 29, 2022 against UNCW.
- Whitfield-Moss had her ninth double-digit kill game of the season.
- Wright had her fifth game this season with double-digit digs and her fourth in her last five games.
- Delaware's 25-8 second set victory was its largest of the season, and its largest since beating Stony Brook 25-8 during the second set on Oct. 15, 2023.
- Delaware is 3-0 all-time against Hampton, having never dropped a set.
- Over Delaware's current nine-match win streak, it are 21-5 in sets.
