Women’s Basketball Splits Regular-Season Meeting With Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Despite strong outings from Chloe Wilson and Ande'a Cherisier, the University of Delaware women's basketball couldn't overcome the hump against Towson Sunday afternoon inside SECU Arena. The Blue Hens (10-16, 6-8 CAA) dropped a 70-57 road decision to the Tigers (16-9, 8-6 CAA), splitting the regular-season meeting. With four games left in the regular season, the Blue & Gold is currently sitting in seventh place.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: Towson 20, Delaware 13
The penultimate weekend of the regular season is approaching as the Blue Hens will be set to play host for its final two home games. Delaware will welcome CAA-newcomer Campbell to Newark for the first time in program history Friday evening (March 1) inside Bob Carpenter Center. Opening tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live simultaneously on Delmarva Sports Network and FloHoops.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- The Blue Hens were led by Wilson, who had a season-high 23 points (6-of-9 FG, 10-of-12 FT), grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals.
- She and Ande'a Cherisier (12 points, 4-of-14 FG, 4-of-4 FT, seven rebounds, one steal) were the lone Blue Hens in double figures.
- Delaware finished the day shooting 31.6 percent (18-of-57) from the field, 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc and 90 percent (18-of-29) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens and Tigers both finished with 39 rebounds, scoring eight second-chance points off of 11 offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold finished the night with six assists, one blocks, six steals, three fast break points, 35 bench points and scored nine points off of 13 Tiger turnovers.
First Quarter: Towson 20, Delaware 13
- After the Tigers scored the first six points of the game, the Blue Hens scored the next seven points to take a 7-6 lead with 6:31.
- Wilson and Rebecca Demeke scored all seven during the run.
- Towson finished the quarter off on a 12-4 run to take a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
- After the Tigers' lead increased to 23-13 to start the quarter, the Blue Hens went on a 20-10 run to tie the game at 33-33 with 2:51 left.
- Demeke, Wilson, Cherisier, Tara Cousins and Klarke Sconiers all contributed during the run.
- Towson finished the half off with two baskets to take a 37-33 lead into the half.
- Delaware opened the half off on a quick 6-2 run to make it a 39-all game with baskets coming from Wilson and Grace Sundback, along with a pair of Cherisier free throws.
- Towson responded with an 11-2 run to take a 50-41 lead with 4:28 to play, and eventually grew their lead out to as many as 13.
- The Tigers took a 60-47 lead into the final frame.
- The Blue Hens cut Towson's lead to seven points as they started the fourth quarter off on a 6-0 run.
- Wilson, Nakiyah Mays Prince, and Darrionna Howard each scored during the run.
- The Tigers quickly grew their lead back to double digits and wouldn't allow the Blue Hens to get within nine, settling the 70-57 final.
- Towson was paced by a trio of double-digit scorers in Kylie Kornegay-Lucas (15 points, 12 rebounds), Alexia Nelson (11 points) and Patricia Anumgba (10 points, seven rebounds).
- Kayla Morris chipped in with nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
- The Blue Hens and the Tigers split the regular-season match up, capturing wins on their respective home court.
