Second Half Surge Comes Up Short As Women’s Basketball Falls To Campbell

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball welcomed new CAA-foe Campbell inside Bob Carpenter Center Friday evening for the first time in program history. Despite a strong second half behind Chloe Wilson's 22-point performance, the Blue Hens (10-17, 6-9 CAA) dropped a heartbreaking 66-65 final to the Camels (15-11, 8-7 CAA). With three games left in the regular season, Delaware currently sits in ninth place in the league standings.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: Campbell 20, Delaware 15
The Blue Hens will close out its home regular season slate Sunday afternoon (March 3) by welcoming Elon to Newark for a CAA Senior Day battle. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live simultaneously on FloHoops and Delmarva Sports Network. Fans are encouraged to arrive at 12:30 p.m. to help celebrate the six-member senior class of 2024: manager Kevin Hermansander, Jadaia Reid, Demeke, Wilson, Klarke Sconiers and Tara Cousins.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Wilson led all scorers with 22 points (8-13 FG, 5-9 FT, 1-2 3FG) to go along with six rebounds.
- Ande'a Cherisier followed behind with 11 points (5-8 FG) and two steals while Grace Sundback chipped in 10 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3FG), four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
- Delaware finished the evening shooting 45 percent (27-60) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-13) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens finished with a +3 rebound margin, 31-28, scoring two second-chance points off nine offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold finished the night with 13 assists, two blocks, 10 steals, nine fastbreak points, 14 bench points, 42 points in the paint and scored 12 points off of 19 Camel miscues.
First Quarter: Campbell 20, Delaware 15
- Delaware opened the game's scoring 17 seconds in thanks to a quick heads-up steal and layup by Sydney Boone, 2-0.
- The seesaw battle commenced as both teams fought for the advantage over the next seven minutes.
- A Rebecca Demeke lay-in at the 2:07 mark made it an 11-all game before Christabel Ezumah drilled in a turnaround jumper to kickstart a 9-2 run to take the 20-13 lead.
- Darrionna Howard finished off a tough layup after receiving a dime from Nakiyah Mays-Prince for the Blue Hens to close the quarter trailing by five, 20-15.
- Campbell grew its lead to a quarter-high 13 points courtesy of Shy Tuelle's triple with 6:03 showing on the second-quarter clock.
- Cherisier's layup at the 5:47 mark ignited an 8-1 Blue Hen spurt to trim the deficit to six, 31-25, with 3:27 left.
- After putting together a 6-2 run, the Camels rebuilt its double-digit advantage heading into the break up 37-27.
- The Camels held a 13-point lead, 42-29, 45 seconds into the third frame.
- Sundback sank a pair of freebies to kickstart a 6-0 Delaware run to pull within single digits, 42-35, with 7:51 remaining in the quarter.
- Campbell used a 7-2 spurt to rebuild another double-digit lead, 49-37.
- Wilson and Sundback answered back by draining back-to-back triples as part of the Blue Hens 13-6 run, making it a two-possession game (55-51) at the 1:16 mark.
- With eight seconds left, Gemma Nunez laid in two for Campbell to send the 57-51 game into the final quarter.
- With 4:41 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Nunez connected from deep for Campbell to rebuild another 11-point cushion, 66-55.
- 18 seconds later, Howard laid in two for the Blue Hens to score 10 unanswered points to pull within one with 40 seconds left in the period.
- Mays-Prince forced Nunez into a turnover giving Delaware the final possession with 16 seconds remaining before Demeke's last-second jumper rimmed out, settling the 66-65 final.
- Nunez (eight rebounds, two blocks) and Tuelle (four rebounds) paced Campbell with 14 points.
- Behind them was Ezumah with 12 points and two blocks while Svenia Nurenberg added 11 points.
- This was the first meeting between both programs.
- The Blue Hens are currently on a two-game skid while the Camels extended their winning streak to three games.
- For the second-straight game, Wilson has led all scorers and this is her second-straight 20+ point game performance.
