RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware softball freshman Gianna Costaro was named CAA Rookie of the Week after her performance against Charleston, the conference announced on March 12, 2024.Â
Costaro hit .500/.600/.625 with three runs scored, a double, and an RBI in an opening CAA series win over Charleston. In the series opener, Costaro went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in a win, then went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and walk in the second game of the doubleheader. In the rubber match, she went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored as Delaware completed a five-run comeback.Â
This is Costaro's first CAA Rookie of the Week honor, but she previously was named conference Player of the Week on Feb. 27. Delaware has earned a CAA weekly award in four consecutive weeks, as Chloe Blantz and Morgan Hess earned Player of the Week honors on Feb. 20 and March 5. Delaware is the only team with four CAA weekly award winners this season.Â
Costaro has paced the Delaware offense this season, hitting .378/.541/.800 with five home runs, 18 runs, four doubles, 12 walks, 14 RBI, and 36 total bases. She ranks fourth in the CAA in average, first in on base percentage, first in slugging percentage, tied for first in home runs, second in runs, third in walks, and fifth in RBIs. Delaware as a team leads the conference in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, hits, runs scored, doubles, and total bases. The Blue Hens next play Morgan State at home tomorrow before a three-game series on the road against N.C. A&T.Â
