Women’s Basketball Starts Quest For CAA Title #4 on Thursday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – 30 regular-season games are complete and March Madness is upon us! The University of Delaware women's basketball team is set to start its journey to hoist up its fourth Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) title after finishing the 2023-24 regular season 11-19 and 7-11 in conference play. The Blue Hens secured the No. 10 seed in the upcoming 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Primis and second-year head coach Sarah Jenkins and her flock of Blue Hens will face No. 7 seed Drexel in the second round Thursday, March 14 at 5 p.m. Coverage of the tournament will be available on FloHoops.

THE QUEST TO THE CAA TROPHY AND THE NCAA AUTOMATIC BID IS ON!
The 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Primis, will run from Wednesday, March 13 through Sunday, March 17 inside the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C., home to the Washington Mystics. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.
The 14-team tournament field begins with a first-round matchup between No. 12 Hampton and No. 13 Hofstra at 2 p.m. followed by No. 11 Northeastern and Nov. 14 UNCW at 4:30 p.m..
The second round begins on Thursday with No. 8 Campell and No. 9 Elon at 12 p.m., followed by No. 5 William & Mary facing the winner of Wednesday's first-round contest between the Pirates/Pride at 2:30 p.m. The action continues with the Blue Hens/Dragons showdown at 5 p.m., before concluding with No. 6 Towson awaiting the winner of the Huskies/Seahawks matchup in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
The top four seeds earned byes to Friday's quarterfinals, where they will await winners from Thursday's second round. No. 1/CAA Regular Season Champions Stony Brook will open the quarterfinal competition at 12 p.m. against the winner of Campbell/Elon. The second game of the day will tip at 2:30 p.m., featuring No. 4 North Carolina A&T versus either William & Mary or the Hampton/Hofstra winner. At 5 p.m., No. 2/defending CAA champions Monmouth awaits the winner of Delaware/Drexel before rounding out the night with No. 3 Charleston against the victor of Towson or the Northeastern/UNCW winner at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday's semifinals are set for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with the winners advancing to the CAA Title game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, which will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network for the second time in league history.
OUR POSTSEASON HISTORY
The Blue Hens will be chasing title number four as the last time the team hoisted up the CAA Championship was in 2022. The Blue & Golf dethroned Drexel on March 13, 2022 with a 63-59 victory inside Daskalakis Athletic Center to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. Delaware won back-to-back titles in 2012 & 2013 and overall is 30-18 all-time in CAA tournament games. This will be Coach Jenkins second time coaching in the postseason since taking the helm of the program.
SEASON/ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST DREXEL
Delaware and Drexel will be meeting for the third time this season, as the Dragons completed the regular season series sweep over the Blue Hens. The Blue Hens entered the Dragons' lair on Feb. 2, 2024 and dropped a 53-49 final despite a double-double outing from Chloe Wilson. Wilson finished the evening posting her 15th career, fourth on the season, double-double with a 17-point (8-of-14 FG) and 10-rebound performance. Sydney Boone (3-of-7 FG) and Klarke Sconiers (3-of-5 FG) each added seven points off the bench. Boone and Tara Cousins led the Blue Hens in assists with four, while Sconiers added two rebounds.
Delaware and Drexel met again on Feb. 18, 2024 inside Bob Carpenter Center where despite a strong outing by Rebecca Demeke, the Blue Hens saw their hearts ripped out of their chest as the squad dropped a close 61-59 game to the Dragons. Demeke had a day where she finished the game with a game-high 18 points (6-8 3FG) to go with four rebounds. Ande'a Cherisier followed with 13 points (5-9 FG) and four rebounds while Boone chipped in with a career-best eight assists.
The Blue Hens and the Dragons have played against one another 96 times, nine of which were in the conference tournament with Delaware holding the 7-2 edge. Overall, Delaware holds the 52-44 record, 8-2 on neutral grounds (including regular-season meetings) and this will be the first time both teams will be meeting in the second round. The Blue Hens are 3-0 when facing the Dragons as a lower seed. This will be the fifth time head coaches Jenkins and Amy Mallon will be meeting since taking the reigns of their respective programs.
LEADING THE BLUE & GOLD TO THE PROMISE LAND
In her second year at the helm of the Blue Hens, head coach Jenkins and her squad closed out the regular season posting an 11-19 record and 7-11 mark in conference to earn a spot in the conference's first-ever 14-team tournament. The Blue Hens will look to the veteran leadership in Wilson and Cousins while looking for a huge impact coming at the hands of the freshman Cherisier.
In her first year as a Blue Hen, Wilson has made her presence known and felt in the paint. Starting in 26 of her 29 appearances this season, the Freeport, N.Y. native leads the team with 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 74.8 percent from the free throw line. Serving as one of the team captains, Wilson has scored in double figures in 17 games (current streak: five games) highlighted by posting three 20+ point performances, four double-doubles and pulling down 15 rebounds (tied career-best) during this campaign.
For the second straight year, Cousins has served as one of the team captains and has transitioned back into her natural position of the shooting guard this season. The Washington, D.C. native has started in 28 of her 29 appearances averaging a career-best 10.5 points per game to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest.
The rookie in Cherisier is looking to add to the mix after a strong first year in the Blue & Gold uniform. The Baltimore, Md. native made her mark moving into the starting rotation, starting in 12 of her 28 appearances. Cherisier ranks third among the team averaging 9.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 72.5 percent from the free throw line. Cherisier has scored in double figures in 12 games (longest streak: three games), highlighted by her career-best 21-point outing against Towson on Jan. 28, 2024.
