Baseball Knocks off No. 22 Campbell in Conference Opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The University of Delaware baseball team opened Coastal Athletic Association play with a win over No. 22 Campbell by a score of 10-8 on Friday.
With the win, the Blue Hens record improves to 10-10 overall and are 1-0 in conference play.
The last time the Blue Hens defeated a ranked opponent was back in 2022 when the Blue Hens defeated No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 24 Maryland. It is the third win over a ranked opponent over the last three years for Delaware.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS

The Blue Hens went 10-of-36 from the plate, drove in eight RBI's, hit two home runs, walked three times, and struck out nine.

Jake Dunion led the way individually, going 3-of-5 from the plate, driving in one run and scoring twice. Dunion, along with Joey Loynd (2-of-4, HR, RBI) and Aidan Kane (2-of-4, RBI) had multiple hits.Â

Starting for the Blue Hens today was Tyler August. He went 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs off seven hits, walked four batters and struck out four as well. Eli Atya came in relief for UD. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three earned runs off two hits, struck out two batters, and walked four. He was credited with the win and is now 2-0 on the season. Anthony Gubitosi pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs, gave up three hits, walked one batter and struck out four.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ

After the Camels got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Blue Hens chipped away at the lead and scored runs over the next four innings.

In the second inning, Jake Dunion stole third base, and advanced to home off an error from the pitcher, along with Tyler Leach scoring off a wild pitch. In the third inning, Andrew Amato grounded out to the shortstop, and scored Eric Ludman in the process. Bryce Greenly hit a two run home run in the fourth, and Jake Dunion hit an RBI single. With the runs, the Blue Hens took a 6-5 lead.

After the Camels retook the lead with a 3-run home run, the Blue Hens rallied off four runs in the seventh off a Joey Loynd home run, a 2-run double from Leach and an Adain Kane RBI single to take a 10-8 lead.

Gubitosi shut out the Camel offense for the final three innings, allowing no runs off three hits.
