Baseball Defeats Penn in Opening Round of Liberty Bell Classic

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Delaware baseball team defeated Penn by a score of 12-6 in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday.
With the win, the Blue Hens overall record improves to 12-11, and they'll advance to the next round of the Liberty Bell Classic to take on Lafayette on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Offensively, the Blue Hens went 12-of-39 from the plate, driving in 12 RBI's, walked 10 times, and struck out 16 times.

Individually, the Blue Hens were led by Bryce Greenly, who went 3-of-5 from the plate, driving in one RBI and walking once. Additional Blue Hens with multiple hits are Jackson Tyer (2-for-4, RBI, 2 BB, 2 runs), and Josearmando Diaz (2-for-5, 2 RBI).

Nate Rolka started on the mound for the Blue Hens. He pitched 2.1 innings, gave up 3 earned runs off 3 hits, walked five batters and struck out one. In relief was Wyatt Nelson, Tyler Strechay, Christian Colmery, Owen Margolis and Anthony Gubitosi. The five pitchers went 7.1 innings, allowed three earned runs off eight hits, walked two batters and struck out five. Colmery was credited with the decision and is 1-0 on the season.

After the Quakers got out to a 5-1 lead in the games first five innings, the Blue Hens took momentum with a big nine run inning in the top of the sixth.Â

The rally was started with a Josearmando Diaz RBI single.Â

The momentum shifted when Brett Lesher hit a grand slam to give them a 6-5 lead. Andrew Amato, Jackson Tyer, and Diaz all added runs in the inning to make it 10-5.
- UD added two runs over the last three innings to secure the win.

The Blue Hens snapped a five game winning streak for the Quakers.Â

With the win, UD is now 14-7 all time against Penn and is 8-2 in PhiladelphiaÂ
