Softball Splits Doubleheader With Charleston

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball began CAA play with a split of a doubleheader against The College of Charleston, winning 5-1 before falling 2-1.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE
- Emily Winburn pitched a complete game with five hits, zero earned runs, and two walks allowed with nine strikeouts.
- Gianna Costaro went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Julia Boyet went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
- Morgan Hess had two hits and an RBI.
- Sydney Shaffer went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME TWO
- Hess pitched a complete game with four hits, two runs, and two walks allowed. She also had a hit and two walks
- Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a walk.Â
- Costaro went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
- Katie Scheivert drew two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Winburn struck out three in the first, but a run scored on a passed ball.Â
- Delaware took the lead in the second after Maddie Fife brought Costaro home on a fielder's choice and Scheivert scored on an error.
- Winburn stranded runners on the corners by recording a strikeout and popup to end the inning.
- A strikeout by Winburn in the top of the fourth stranded a runner at third. Winburn then pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
- Delaware added three runs in the bottom half of the inning, all with two outs. Shaffer singled and Costaro reached on an error, and both advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Boyet brought them both home on a single into right field, then scored on a hit by Hess to put Delaware up 5-1.Â
- Winburn struck out three more in a scoreless sixth, then finished off the seventh by fielding a comebacker and clinching a win for Delaware in their CAA opener.
- Hess pitched back-to-back no-hit innings to start the game before allowing a two-out single in a scoreless third.Â
- She didn't allow any hits in the fourth or fifth innings either, striking out a batter in the fifth.Â
- Charleston took a 2-0 lead in the sixth on a single and back-to-back two-out doubles.
- Delaware rallied in the seventh, with Shaffer drawing a walk to leadoff the inning. Anaya Troy pinch ran and scored on an RBI double by Costaro, but Charleston held on to win 2-1.Â
GAME NOTES
- Winburn pitched her 40th career complete game. Her nine strikeouts were a season-high and one shy of tying her career-best.Â
- Winburn has three starts this season allowing zero earned runs, and two consecutive.Â
- Hess recorded her 100th career base hit during game one. Her complete game was her second this season and 27th of her career.Â
- Shaffer upped her average to .412 on the season. She and Hess have six multi-hit games this year.Â
- Blantz has a hit in six straight games and 15 of UD's 18 games this season.Â
- Boyet has five games this season with multiple RBIs.Â
