Delaware Comes From Behind To Earn Win Over Charleston After Suspended Game Called

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball defeated Charleston, 8-6, in the rubber match of a three-game opening CAA series on Saturday. Delaware trailed 5-0 in the fourth inning, and used a five-run fifth inning to take the lead before inclement weather suspended the game until Sunday afternoon. The game was called in the fifth inning due to unplayable field conditions, giving Delaware the victory.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Maddie Fife went 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs, a walk, and a run scored.Â
- Julia Boyet went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.Â
- Veronica Diomede went 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI.Â
- Gianna Costaro went 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored
- Katie Scheivert recorded two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emily Winburn pitched a hitless first inning. Charleston scored two runs on a throwing error in the second.
- Charleston added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly and two in the fourth to go up 5-0 after a double.Â
- Delaware's bats got going in the bottom of the fourth as Costaro and Boyet led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Scheivert had a sacrifice fly, and Fife followed it up with a two-out two-run home run to pull Delaware within a pair of runs.
- Charleston added a run in the fifth.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Shaffer and Costaro worked back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Boyet had an RBI single to bring home Jenna Giattino, who had pinch ran, and Hess walked to load the bases. Scheivert and Fife both worked bases-loaded walks to tie the game. Diomede gave Delaware the lead after being hit by a pitch, and then Sheivert scored the inning's fifth run on a wild pitch before play was halted.Â
GAME NOTES
- Fife had a season-best three RBIs and has driven in multiple runs in three of her last five games. Her home run was the first at home for Delaware this season and the 17th of her career.Â
- Boyet has five multi-hit games this season.
- Diomede had her first career multi-hit game, triple, and RBI.Â
- Delaware won their first CAA-opening series since 2017.Â
