Women’s Basketball Closes Out Regular-Season Slate At Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware women's basketball was ready to close out the 2023-24 regular season slate on the road against Charleston on Saturday afternoon inside TD Arena. Despite putting together a strong third quarter to pull within three points, the Blue Hens (11-19, 7-11 CAA) ran out of gas in the fourth and fell 102-77 to the Cougars (21-8, 13-5 CAA).
Ahead of next week's 2023-24 CAA Women's Basketball Championship, the Blue & Gold will finish the season as the 10th seed, losing the tiebreaker to Elon. Delaware will draw seventh-seeded Drexel and tipoff is scheduled for next Thursday, March 13 at 5 p.m. inside Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. Coverage of the tournament will be on FloHoops until the championship game on March 17, which will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
First Quarter: Charleston 24, Delaware 16

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Chloe Wilson paced Delaware with 13 points (5-of-9 FG, 6-of-6 FT) and six rebounds.
- Behind Wilson was Grace Sundback, who finished with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.
- Nakiyah Mays-Prince chipped in 11 points and five rebounds while Tara Cousins added 10 points.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 42.4 percent (22-of-66) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens pulled down 34 rebounds and scored eight second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.
- The Blue & Gold finished with 19 assists, five blocks, four steals, 32 points in the paint, nine fast break points, 27 bench points and scored 12 points off of 12 Cougar turnovers.
First Quarter: Charleston 24, Delaware 16
- Ande'a Cherisier opened the game's scoring 46 seconds in to give Delaware the early 2-0 lead.
- Charleston responded with a 21-9 spurt to take the double-digit lead, 21-11, with 3:27 left.
- Klarke Sconiers and Rebecca Demeke combined to score Delaware's next five points to pull within five points, 21-16, with 1:40 remaining.
- The Cougars scored the quarter's final three points to push its lead back to eight, 24-16, to close the quarter.
- Charleston applied pressure in the second frame, extending its lead to a quarter-high 15 points (35-20), thanks to Marissa Brown's triple at the 5:58 mark.
- Delaware didn't count themselves out, answering with a much-needed 20-9 run, kickstarted by a routine Cousins' jumper at the 5:47 mark, to trail by four, 44-40.
- The Cougars scored the remaining four points of the quarter, sending the 48-40 game into the break.
- Charleston rebuilt a double-digit lead, 56-44, courtesy of Jada Logan's jumper at the 7:50 mark.
- With 7:33 showing on the third-quarter clock, the Blue Hens kept chipping away at the lead by putting together a 12-2 spurt.
- The run was headlined by the rookie Sundback's seven-straight points, Cherisier's layup and capped by Mays-Prince connecting from deep, forcing Charleston to call timeout, 58-55.
- After Charleston went up eight (63-55) with 4:07 remaining, the Blue Hens charged ahead with a 10-6 spurt capped by a Cousins' three to make it a one possession game heading into the final quarter, 69-66.
- Delaware ran out of gas as Charleston started to pull away in the fourth.
- The Cougars would outscore the Blue Hens 33-11 to extend its lead to a game-high 25 points, settling the 102-77 final.
- Alexis Andrews finished with a game-high 30 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and two steals for Charleston.
- Logan followed with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Jenna Annecchiarico added 16 points and five assists.
- Charleston is the first team this season to score 100+ points against the Blue Hens.
- The last time Delaware allowed that many points was against Maryland, 102-71, on March 18, 2022.
- The Blue Hens will shift gears to the 2023-24 CAA Championships which runs from March 13-17, vying for the automatic bid into the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. This will be the second-straight year the Blue Hens will start its CAA tournament journey in the second round.
