Softball Walks It Off Against Monmouth To Sweep Weekend Series

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware's softball's Chloe Blantz had a walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh to help complete the Blue Hens' come-from-behind win against Monmouth, 4-3, and sweep the weekend series. Delaware has now won seven straight games and 11 straight home games - tied for the eighth longest current home win streak in the country.Â

- Emily Winburn threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run and one walk.Â
- Blantz went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and the walk-off RBI.
- Julz Garber went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Maddie Fife went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Monmouth scored an unearned run in first.Â
- A line drive double play turned by Boyet helped Winburn through the second inning.Â
- Winburn stranded two runners in the third inning after inducing a groundout.Â
- After a hitless fourth inning, Shaffer singled and Boyet doubled to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Fife hit a sacrifice fly to score Anaya Troy and tie the game.Â
- Monmouth scored a pair of runs in the fifth to retake the lead. Winburn maneuvered out of a jam in the sixth after two runners got into scoring position with one out.Â
- Delaware got two runs back in the sixth, jump started by a leadoff single by Fife after an 18-pitch at bat. Blantz and Luzon both singled to load the bases with one out, then a wild pitch scored pinch runner Jenna Giattino. Sofia Hollingsworth worked a walk as a pinch hitter to reload the bases, then Garber tied the game on a groundout to score Blantz.
- Winburn threw her most effective inning in the seventh, recording a strikeout and two flyouts to Morgan Hess in right field.
- Shaffer led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Boyet. Fife walked and Hess reached on an error to load the bases. Blantz hit a 1-1 pitch into the gap in left center to complete Delaware's comeback and deliver a walk-off win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Blantz recorded her second career game-ending hit, first career walk-off hit, and second career go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning or later. She ended the game with a single in the seventh inning against Fairfield on March 3 to give Delaware an 8-0, five inning win. She also had a go-ahead walk in the seventh inning on April 16, 2022 against Towson.
- Delaware's walk-off win was their second this season, and first at home. Boyet hit a walk-off home run against Iowa State during the Rawlings Classic at University of Virginia.Â
- Winburn recorded her 19th win of the season. She has tied Carolynn Sloat (2006) for second most in a season all-time. She is one away from tying the single-season program record of 20 set by Susan Dugan in 2000.Â
- Winburn's complete game was her 14th of the season, the 50th of her career, and her ninth straight in games she has started. She is one of six pitchers in program history with 50 career complete games - Carolynn Sloat (96), Kristi O'Connell (78), Patty Freeman (61), Kathy Tucci (57), and Krysta Pidstawski (50).Â
- Winburn has allowed one earned run or fewer in 21 games this season and in 16 of her past 20 games. She has a 1.51 ERA since March 3.Â
- Garber recorded her team-best 15th multiple hit game, while Shaffer had her 13th.Â
- Shaffer has hit in five straight games and now has a season-best 15 straight games reaching base.Â
- Luzon is 11-for-17 (.647) as a pinch hitter this season and has pinch hits in her last four chances.Â
- Delaware's 31 wins are their fifth most ever in program history trailing 2000 (36), 2013 (35), 2006 (33), and 1999 (33).Â
