Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Coppin State

HEN HIGHLIGHTS, GAME ONE
- Winburn pitched a shutout with seven strikeouts, zero walks, and just four hits allowed.Â
- Julz Garber went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
- Katie Scheivert and Julia Boyet both went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sheivert added a stolen base and Boyet added an RBI.
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a run scored, and a double.
- Maddie Fife and Gianna Costaro went 1-for-2. Costaro also had an RBI.
- Lillie Scheivert hit her first career home run, had two RBIs, and drew a walk.
- Garber went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base, and run scored.
- Julia Boyet went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.Â
- Costaro went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored.Â
- Shaffer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Morgan Hess drove in two runs with a single.Â
- Kristen Luzon had a pinch-hit RBI single.Â
- Kendall Shank earned the win after pitching 3.2 innings and allowed zero runs.Â
- Winburn picked up the save after pitching the final two innings and allowed no runs.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
- Winburn threw a hitless first inning. Delaware put up a three-spot in the bottom half. Garber singled and stole second base and came around to score on an RBI single by Boyet. Shaffer doubled her home, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Costaro.Â
- Winburn went 1-2-3 in the second inning, and struck out two in the third. Delaware added another run in the third. Katie Scheivert singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, then scored on a squeeze bunt by Shaffer.Â
- Winburn allowed just a hit in the fourth and fifth innings.Â
- A two-out RBI single by Shaffer scored Garber in the fifth inning to put Delaware up 5-0.
- Winburn struck out three in the final two innings to seal the shutout.Â
- Delaware put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Garber reached on an error, Boyet walked, and Shaffer singled to load the bases. A passed ball and a two-run double by Costaro put Delaware up 3-0. Hess drove in two more runs to give Delaware a 5-0 lead.
- Coppin State scored six unearned runs in the second.Â
- A double play turned by Costaro helped Shank through a scoreless third. In the bottom of the third, Ryleigh Thomas drew a walk to set up the go-ahead home run by Lillie Scheivert to put Delaware up 7-6.Â
- Shank allowed just a single in the fourth and another unassisted double play turned by Costaro ended the fifth.Â
- Winbun came on in the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Delaware added three insurance runs in the bottom half. Boyet and Shaffer singled to lead off the sixth before a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Luzon pinched hit and drove in Boyet with a single to right, and Thomas brought home Shaffer to put Delaware ahead 9-6.
- Coppin State only mustered a single against Winburn in a scoreless seventh as she recorded a six-out save.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware recorded their 12th shutout during game one, tied for the third most in program history in a season. They are one shy of tying last season's 13 for second most, and need 19 to tie the record set in 2000. Delaware has not allowed an earned run in five straight games.
- Delaware's three straight shutouts from Saturday until game one today was their longest streak of the season and their longest since last season when they shutout Hampton in a weekend series to end the regular season.Â
- Delaware also won their 35th game of the season, tying them for second most in program history (2013). They are one shy of tying the record of 36 done in 2000.
- Winburn's complete game was her 16th of the season, the 52nd of her career, and her 11th straight in games she has started.Â
- Winburn has allowed zero earned runs or fewer in 17 games this season and in 11 of her past 16 games. She has a 1.31 ERA since March 3 and a 0.82 ERA since March 20.Â
- Winburn tied Susan Dogan (20, 2000) for most wins in a season and Megan Stauffer (5, 2022) for most saves in a season.Â
- This was the fifth time Winburn earned a win and a save in both ends of a doubleheader, having also done it on March 16 against N.C. A&T, March 20 against Penn, March 22 against Stony Brook, and March 29 against Drexel.
- Winburn became the third Delaware pitcher all-time with 20 career shutouts, joining Kristi O'Connell (27) and Carolynn Sloat (25). She also became the 15th active pitcher with 20 career shutouts.
- Lillie Scheivert's home run was the first of her career. She's the fourth Delaware freshman to hit a home run this season, joining Veronica Diomede, Ellie Mulligan, and Costaro. Home runs by four different freshmen are the most for Delaware since having five in 2005.
- Garber recorded her 18th multi-hit game of the season, her second straight, and fourth in the last six games.Â
- Boyet extended her hitting streak to a season-best six games. She is 9-for-17 (.529) during the streak with two doubles. She is also hitting .429/.484/.607 over her last 10 games with four multi-hit games.
- Katie Scheivert extended her hitting streak to five, tying her best this season.Â
- Shaffer recorded two hits in both games of the doubleheader and has multiple hits in four of her last nine games played.Â
- Luzon is 12-for-20 as a pinch hitter this season with nine RBIs.Â
- Shank recorded her fourth win of her career and second this season.Â
- Delaware has scored in the first inning in their last four games, all wins. They are now 22-1 this season when scoring in the first inning and 27-1 when they score first. Â
- Delaware is a perfect 10-0 against Coppin State all-time.Â
- Delaware finished the non-conference portion of their schedule at 17-6.Â
