Stewart's Walk-Off Single Clinches CAA Tournament Berth for Baseball

NEWARK, Del. - A walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning from Aiden Stewart clinches a spot in the Coastal Athletic Association tournament with a dramatic 8-7 win over No. 24 (PerfectGame.org) UNCW on Thursday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

With the win, the Blue Hens overall record improves to 28-23 and 15-10 in CAA play.Â

- Chris Dengler (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 2B) led the Blue Hens with two of their nine hits. Bryce Greenly, Eric Ludman, Joey Loynd, Aaron Graeber, Andrew Amato, Stewart and Brett Lesher all recorded a hit
- Starting on the mound was Doug Marose. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowed five earned runs off six hits, and walked one batter. Eli Atiya pitched the next 4.2 innings, allowed two earned runs off four hits, struck out six batters and walked one. Anthony Gubitosi pitched the final three innings, didn't allow any hits or runs, and struck out six batters. He picked up the win and now has a 2-1 record.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Blue Hens got out to a 6-0 lead over the first two innings. Graeber drove in a run off a double and Amato drove in two runs off a single in the first. In the second, Greenly drove in a run off a single and Dengler drove in two off a double.
- The Seahawks quickly caught up and tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the third.
- The Blue Hens added a run in the bottom of the fourth off a solo home run for Ludman, and the Seahawks tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.Â
- Stewart was the hero as he drove in Dengler from third with the game winning RBI single.Â
UP NEXT
- UD will complete the regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow.Â
- Game one starts at 4 p.m. with the second game following 40 minutes after the first. Both games will be nine innings.
- Friday is also senior day as the Blue Hens honor 13 athletes. The ceremony kicks off at 3:30 p.m.
