Softball Announces Addition of Marlayna Capaldi

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball has announced the addition of transfer Marlayna Capaldi to the program for the 2024-25 year.Â
"I am ecstatic about adding Marlayna to our roster," head coach Jen Steele said. "Being a Delawarean, we've known her for a long time and this is a full circle moment for our coaching staff. She is another student athlete who aligns with our program values and she is going to elevate our program both on and off the field. Not only will she provide depth to our infield, but she will bring leadership and IQ to our dugout."
Capaldi joins Delaware after two seasons at South Alabama, where she appeared in 17 games in two seasons and scored eight runs during her career. Capaldi helped the Jaguars to an at-large NCAA Tournament selection as the two-seed in the Gainesville Regional. South Alabama defeated Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast before bowing out to No. 1 seeded Florida. Capaldi helped South Alabama to 39 wins and 20 Sun Belt wins in 2023. She's also been a Sun Belt Commssioner's List selection.Â
Capaldi, a Wilmington, Del. native, attended school at Charter School of Wilmington. She graduated with a 3.955 grade-point average while lettering as a third baseman and shortstop. Cpaldi was team captain in her final two seasons and led her team to conference championships and state tournament appearances. She was named All-Conference Honorable Mention as a senior, hitting .382 with a 1.064 OPS.Â
Delaware is coming off a season in which they set program records in single-season wins and conference wins, and tied their record for longest win streak at 13 and longest conference win streak at 10. The Blue Hens also led the CAA in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, doubles, and total bases. They pitched to a 1.98 ERA, finishing ninth in NCAA, and ranked 27th nationally in shutouts.Â
