NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware field hockey head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof announced the program's Leadership Team and Captains for the 2024 season. The Leadership Team will enjoy the passion and talents of seniors Morgan Bradford and Genevieve Johnson, junior Noelle Sabbagh and sophomore Rachael Whitehead.
"It has been a pleasure to see the growth of these four student-athletes as team leaders this past spring and over the summer months. It was a natural process of them stepping up and being endorsed and supported by their peers," van de Kerkhof said. "They have been instrumental in the creation of our UDFH Standards setting behaviors and expectations for Delaware Hockey (DEHO). They also were instrumental in our preseason development."
Following the program's preseason, Johnson and Whitehead accepted the ask to serve as this season's on-field captains.
"I am excited and proud of Genevieve and Rachael for the commitment they made to grow not only themselves but the overall team's growth of performance and development. Also their ability to represent our team as captains on game-day with the umpires and other teams."
Johnson enters the 2024 season looking to build upon an All-CAA Second Team selection from a year ago and a Preseason All-CAA selection going into this season. Whitehead and Sabbagh each earned honorable mentions as Sabbagh, like Johnson, garnered All-CAA Second Team last season while Whitehead earned a spot on the All-Rookie team.
"Our team put in a lot of hard work and made a number of sacrifices to come in fit and to train together for two weeks prior to our program's official preseason," said van de Kerkhof. "Currently, our Team Leadership and Captains have done an outstanding job putting our team into a good start position with our season opener versus Lafayette College."
The Blue Hens open the 2024 season on the road against the Lafayette Leopards on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
