Volleyball Sweeps Kent State To Earn First Win Of Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Kent State in straight sets (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) to wrap up the Michigan Nike Classic and earn their first win of the season.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Kirah Johnson had a match-high tying eight kills, hit .467, and recorded four blocks.
Savannah Seemans also had-high eight kills and added 11 digs.
Lily Rogers had a match-high 29 assists.
Asia Murray had five kills, hit .400, and recorded four blocks.
Anna Logan Gillens recorded six kills.
Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had four kills and four blocks.
Emily Chrysogelos recorded three kills.
Hannah Wright had 12 digs.
Cadence Nguyen and Taylor Holly both had five digs

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET

Seven different Blue Hens recorded kills in the first set, with Chrysogelos leading the way with three. Rogers had nine assists.
Kent State went up 7-3 early in the set. Nguyen went on a 5-0 service run to take a one-point lead. Kent State pulled back ahead 13-10, but Chrysogelos provided a spark with two kills to help UD tied it up at 14.
Dylan Norris highlighted a 4-0 run with a block and kill to help tie the set at 19. Kills by Chrysogelos and Gillens, an ace by Johnson, and a block by Whitfield-Moss gave Delaware a 25-22 set win.

SECOND SET

Delaware dominated the second set, hitting .407 while holding Kent State to a -.100 hitting percentage. Five players had multiple kills for UD, with Murray leading the way with four.
The set was tied 4-4 before Delaware rattled off a 16-3 run to go up 20-7. Delaware used two 4-0 runs, a 3-0 spurt, and a 5-0 run to take control. During Delaware's second 4-0 run to go up 15-6, Rogers and Murray both recorded blocks and Rogers added a kill. Murray had two kills during UD's 5-0 run to go up 20-7, and Rogers added an ace.
After two consecutive points for Kent State, UD outscored the Flash, 5-2 to close out the set. Seemans had the final two kills.

THIRD SET

Set three featured 10 ties and four lead changes, the closet of the match. Delaware was again strong defensively, holding Kent State to a .056 hitting percentage. Johnson led Delaware with four kills, and Seemans and Gillens had three each.
Delaware took a 10-7 lead after a Rogers ace before Kent State responded with a 4-0 run. Delaware took a 15-13 lead after a kill and ace by Gillens, two kills for Seemans, and a kill by Whitfield-Moss.
Kent State cut the lead to 16-15, but Delaware took control of the remainder of the set. Five straight points put UD up 21-15, then Gillens had two kills to set up a match point. Whitfield-Moss and Rogers ended it with a block to secure a Delaware win.

MATCH NOTES

Seemans recorded her first two aces of the season and the 158th of her career. She now ranks eighth all-time in program history, passing Karen Beegle.
Wright's 12 digs were a career-high. Her previous best nine during her freshman season against Wichita State on Sept. 11, 2021.
Chrysogelos' three kills were a career-high.
Norris appeared in her first game since Oct. 9, 2022, and her kill was the first of her career. Her block was her first since having two against American on Sept. 3, 2022.

MICHIGAN NIKE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Savannah Seemans and Kirah Johnson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Seemans had 25 kills and 32 digs in eight sets played. Her 32 kills are the most by a UD player through the first two matches of a season since Katie Turner had 34 in 2021.
Johnson had 20 kills, hit .364, and had 10 total blocks in eight sets played.
