Volleyball Sweeps Cal Baptist, Falls To Iowa At Hawkeye Classic

IOWA CITY, IOWA - University of Delaware volleyball swept California Baptist (25-16, 25-19, 28-26) before being defeated in five sets to Iowa (25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 13-25, 7-15) to begin the Hawkeye Invite.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS VS CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
- Anna Logan Gillens had a match-high 13 kills and hit .296.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss and Raina Hughes both hit .500, with Whitfield-Moss recording seven kills and Hughes recording five. Hughes also had three blocks.
- Kirah Johnson had six kills, four aces, four blocks, and three digs.
- Lily Rogers had 31 assists, four aces, and five digs.
- Savannah Seemans had seven kills, an ace, two blocks, and five digs. Â
- Hannah Wright and Cadence Nguyen both had four digs, and Taylor Holly had three. Nguyen also added an ace and two assists.Â
- Seemans had a match-high 13 kills to go with 15 digs, three aces, and a block.
- Johnson had 12 kills, hit .333, and had three blocks.
- Rogers recorded 40 assists, six kills, two aces, and nine digs.Â
- Nguyen had 12 digs and two aces.
- Holly had 11 digs and an ace.Â
- Whitfield-Moss recorded six kills and four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS CBU
FIRST SET
- Delaware led for the entirety of the first set after both teams traded opening points, with UD hitting .393 as a team and holding CBU to a .154 hitting percentage. Johnson had five kills in the opening set.
- Delaware created separation after CBU cut the lead to 9-8 by ripping off a 12-3 run to go uo 21-11. Johnson had two kills and a block during the run.Â
- Seemans and Gillens helped close the set out with an ace and kill.Â
- After a 2-2 tie to begin the second, Delaware again led for the entirety of the set. Gillens led the Blue Hens with five kills, while Seemans added four. Rogers had 12 assists and four aces.
- UD jumped out for a 14-6 lead by going on a 9-2 run. Rogers had three straight aces to put the Blue Hens up 9-4, then two kills by Seemans and kills by Hughes and Whitfield-Moss helped cap off the run.Â
- CBU rallied to cut the lead down to 16-13, but Delaware scored four straight to regain control. Gillens had two straight kills. Rogers added another ace and Whitfield-Moss and Seemans had kills to finish off the set and put Delaware up 2-0.Â
- Set three featured nine ties and five lead changes, the closest of the match. Gillens had four kills and Whitfield-Moss had three, while Johnson had three aces.
- Cal Baptist took an early lead and maintained a 10-8 advantage. Kills by Gillens and Johnson and two aces by Johnson sparked a 6-0 run and put Delaware ahead 14-10. CBU battled back to tie the set at 16 and led 20-18.Â
- Three straight points by Delaware put them back ahead 21-20, before leading 24-22. CBU staved off defeat and took a 26-25 lead, but Delaware scored the final three points on kills by Whitfield-Moss, Seemans, and a block by Hughes and Johnson to seal the win.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED VS IOWA
FIRST SET
- Delaware hit .385 and held Iowa to a .158 hitting percentage, turning an early deficit into a seven-point set victory. Hughes, Johnson, Seemans, and Gillens all had three kills, while Rogers had 12 assists.Â
- Iowa took an early 7-2 lead, but scored 15 of the next 20 points to go up 17-12. A 4-0 run and two 3-0 runs got Delaware's momentum going. Rogers had two kills and an ace during the run, while Whitfield-Moss and Hughes had back-to-back blocks.Â
- Iowa scored three straight to cut the lead to 17-15, but back-to-back kills by Gillens and an ace and kill by Seemans got Delaware back on track to take a 23-16 lead. Whitfield-Moss and Hughes scored the set's final two points to go up 1-0.Â
SECOND SET
- Iowa used two separate 3-0 spurts to take a 10-8 lead in the second set. Kills by Rogers, Seemans, and Johnson put Delaware ahead 16-13, and a kill by Gillens and Whitfield-Moss had UD up 18-15.
- Iowa outscored Delaware 10-3 the rest of the way to take the set and even the match.Â
- Johnson and Gillens each had three kills and Rogers had 12 assists.Â
THIRD SET
- Delaware again hit .385 for the set, and held Iowa to a .032 hitting percentage. Johnson and Seemans both had three kills in the set.Â
- Delaware got off to a quick start, receiving sparks from Holly and Norris. Holly had an ace and Norris had a kill and block early on, and Delaware took a 12-5 lead after kills by Rogers and Gillens and an ace by Rogers.Â
- Iowa cut the lead to 13-10, but Delaware responded by scoring 12 of the last 15 points of the set. Johnson recorded three kills and a block to close it out as Delaware took a 2-1 lead in the match.Â
FOURTH SET
- Iowa went up 6-0 to start the set and held the lead the entire way to force a fifth set.
FIFTH SET
- Johnson gave Delaware a 2-1 lead to begin the fifth, and the Blue Hens led 3-2 after an attack error by Iowa.Â
- The Hawkeyes scored the next four points to lead 6-3, and took a 10-5 lead after Delaware had cut it to 6-5.Â
- Iowa closed out the match by scoring the final four points.
MATCH NOTES VS CBU
- Johnson's four aces were a new career-high. She has recorded at least four blocks in three consecutive games to begin the season.Â
- Rogers' four aces were her most since having a career-high five against UNCW on Oct. 29, 2022.Â
- Delaware has won six consecutive sets after their second straight match sweep.Â
- Seemans recorded her second double-double of the year.Â
- Seemans now has 162 career aces, the seventh most in program history. She is three shy of tying Nikki Brassell (165) for sixth most.Â
- Rogers' six kills were her most since having 11 against William & Mary on Nov. 18, 2022. It was also her second game this season with at least 40 assists.Â
- Rogers has 899 career assists now.Â
- Holly's 11 digs were a new career-high.Â
