LEWES, Del. – The University of Delaware field hockey team hosted a community clinic at Cape Henlopen High School over the weekend as the Blue Hens welcomed nearly 70 middle and high school aged players from across southern Delaware. They participated in a day full of instruction and learning from current Blue Hens players and coaches.
This year's camp was an extension of Delaware's annual 302 Tour that took place earlier this summer from June 6 through June 9. Beginning with the inaugural trip in 2023, the tour connects UD with the southern half of Delaware and emphasizes the Blue Hens' statewide strategy. For head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, this camp allowed the field hockey program to give back to the Delaware community and southern Delaware families.
"I would like to thank my Blue Hen student-athletes, proud alumni and coaches for volunteering their time in offering this positive experience for so many people with ties to the University and the state of Delaware," said van de Kerkhof. "It was a great day for our University of Delaware community and the clinic was a lot of fun for the participants. I also would like to thank Joy Sabbagh and the Cape Henlopen School District for their great partnership and making this event a reality."
The clinic at Cape Henlopen's Viking Field Hockey Turf offered those in attendance a personalized coaching experience in which the participants honed their skills through dribbling, passing and shooting, and tournament play. In addition, the athletes used the opportunity to ask questions as the Delaware athletes helped their groups face technical and tactical challenges as well as learn teamwork skills and the value of sportsmanship.
"The University of Delaware field hockey program coming to our community in southern Delaware to provide a clinic is an incredible opportunity for young girls passionate about the sport," said Joy Sabbagh, Cape Henlopen community resident and mother of Delaware junior Noelle Sabbagh. "It not only allows them to learn from skilled players but also inspires them to pursue their dreams and develop their talents. This experience fosters a sense of connection and encouragement, showing them that their aspirations are within reach."
"It was such a great overall experience to share what it truly means to be a Blue Hen to our Cape community and the athletes that joined us today," said 2023 All-CAA Second Team member and former Cape Henlopen standout, Noelle Sabbagh.
"I had a great time playing with all of the girls," said rising third-grader Evan Chubb to the Cape Gazette. "I learned how to improve my aerials and pops. My favorite part of the day was when the coaches from UD jumped on our team when they scrimmaged and played alongside us."
