Volleyball Defeats Towson, 3-1, in CAA Championship Rematch

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Towson in four sets (25-22, 25-12, 18-25, 25-21), on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024. It was Delaware's first match against the Tigers since the Blue Hens defeated Towson in last season's CAA Tournament Championship game. Delaware has now won 18 consecutive matches against CAA opponents, including having won their first three CAA matches this season. The Blue Hens also played in front of a crowd of 667, their highest attended game since 2013.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kirah Johnson hit .393 with a team-high tying 13 kills, one ace, and five total blocks.
- Savannah Seemans also had 13 kills and added 11 digs, four aces, and three blocks.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had 12 kills, hit .450, and had four blocks.
- Lily Rogers recorded had 45 assists, eight digs, a block, and an ace.Â
- Anna Logan Gillens recorded 10 kills.
- Dylan Norris had six kills and a block.Â
- Cadence Nguyen had a team-high 16 digs.Â
- Taylor Holly had 10 digs.Â
- Hannah Wright had eight digs.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Set one had 15 ties and six lead changes. Seemans started the match hot with four kills for Delaware's first 11 points, and Delaware tied the set up at 12 by using a 3-0 run.Â
- The Blue Hens used another 3-0 run on blocks by Seemans and Johnson, a kill by Gillens, and an ace by Seemans to go up 15-14. UD pulled away late, scoring six of eight points to lead 23-20 before another Seemans kill and a Towson attack error finished the first set.Â
- Seemans had six kills in the first set and Rogers had 11 assists.Â
SECOND SET
- Delaware dominated set two, as they never trailed and hit .522 to Towson's .048. Whitfield-Moss had four kills and Rogers had 11 more assists.Â
- A 4-0 run early put Delaware ahead for good at 7-3, and they increased their lead up to 14-8. Five straight points on kills by Seemans, Gillens, and Johnson and an ace by Seemans put UD up 19-9.
- Five more consecutive points in a row on kills by Gillens and Whitfield-Moss and an ace by Johnson gave Delaware a 24-10 advantage. Whitfield-Moss had the final kill of the set.Â
THIRD SET
- Towson used a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead, and never relinquished it.Â
- Delaware got as close as 13-11, but both teams played even until Towson scored four of the sets final five points to force a fourth set.Â
- Johnson led Delaware with four kills in the set, and Rogers had 11 assists.Â
- The Hens used a 4-0 spurt, with Whitfield-Moss having three consecutive kills, to take a 9-6 lead. Towson tied the set at 11, but a kill and ace by Norris and Wright and Towson errors put Delaware up 16-13.Â
- Towson cut the lead to 17-16, but UD scored five of the next six, with Whitfield-Moss, Johnson, and Norris picking up kills and Holly having an ace to lead 22-17. Towson put a run together to cut the deficit to 23-21, but an attack error by the Tigers and a Seemans ace ended the set and match.
- Whitfield-Moss had four kills and Rogers had 10 assists in the final set.Â
MATCH NOTES
- Seemans recorded her third double-double of the season. Her four aces tied her season-high. She is now at 177 career aces, moving her past Renee DuFlon for fifth most in program history.Â
- Johnson recorded her 350th career block, and is now at 354 for her career. She is two shy of entering the top 10 in UD program history.Â
- Rogers increased her career assists total to 1,117.Â
- Norris' six kills were a career-high.Â
- Gillens has at least 10 kills in five straight matches.Â
- Holly had her second career 10-dig match.
- Delaware has won three of their last four matches against Towson dating back to last season.Â
- Delaware's 18 straight CAA wins is the seventh longest active conference win streak in the country.Â
- Delaware's attendance of 667 was their best since having an attendance number of 701 on Oct. 4, 2013 against Northeastern.Â
