Volleyball's CAA Win Streak Comes to a Close in Five-Set Defeat to Towson

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware's 18 match win streak against CAA opponents was snapped on Sept. 29 in a five-set (20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 29-27, 8-15) defeat to Towson. Delaware's conference record now sits at 3-1, and they are 7-4 overall.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTSÂ
- Â Kirah Johnson starred for the Blue Hens with 15 kills, a .371 hitting percentage, an ace, and five blocks.Â
- Lily Rogers had 45 assists, three kills, nine digs, and two blocks.
- Savannah Seemans recorded eight kills, two aces, a block, and 10 digs.Â
- Hannah Wright had 10 digs and three assists.
- Cadence Nguyen had a team-best 14 digs and contributed four assists.
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had 11 kills and two blocks.
- Anna Logan Gillens also had 15 kills with seven digs.Â
- Taylor Holly had six digs and an ace and assist.Â
FIRST SET
- Back-to-back kills by Gillens and a kill and block by Norris and Whitfield-Moss put Delaware up 5-2. Towson retook the lead and held an 11-9 advantage before a kill and ace by Johnson even it up.Â
- Towson used two different 3-0 runs and pulled ahead 19-13. Delaware got as close as 22-19 before Towson won the set.
- Rogers had 14 assists in the first set, and Gillens had five kills. Delaware hit .353 as a team.Â
- UD got off to a quick start in the second to lead 5-2, then used a 6-0 run to go up 11-3. Johnson and Gillens had a pair of kills in the stretch and Seemans had an ace.Â
- Towson came back to bring Delaware's lead down to 15-10, but Delaware pulled away to lead 21-13 after a kill by Johnson before claiming the set.Â
- Johnson and Gillens both had four kills in the set, and Rogers had 11 assists. Delaware hit .357 in the set to Towson's .171.Â
- Towson took an early lead this time, going up 6-1. Delaware got as close as 8-6 early, but the Tigers held their lead and increased it to 20-11.
- UD fought back to cut the deficit to 21-15 after an ace by Holly but Towson claimed the set.
- Johnson and Gillens each had three kills in the set.Â
- Towson went up by three quickly and held the lead there for most of the beginning of the set.Â
- Seemans' had a kill to tie the score at 13 and Delaware took their first lead of the set at 15-14 after a Johnson kill. Towson went up 21-19, but three straight UD points gave them a one point lead.
- Towson responded with three in a row to take a 24-22 lead, but another 3-0 run, capped by a block by ROgers and Johnson put them back in front. Delaware scored four of the set's final five points, with Gillens recording back-to-back kills, to force a set five.Â
- Johnson had five kills in the set, and Rogers had 10 assists.Â
- Gillens tied the set at four with a kill, but Towson pulled out in front to take a 9-6 lead.
- The Tigers scored six of the final seven points of the set to claim the match.Â
MATCH NOTES
- Johnson's 15 kills were a career high. She also had her second consecutive match with five blocks.Â
- Johnson now has 359 career blocks, putting her ninth all-time in UD history.Â
- Rogers' career assist total is now at 1,162. She recorded 90 assists in nine sets played this weekend.
- Seemans upped her career kill total to 949.Â
- Gillens has had double-digit kills in six straight games.Â
- Delaware's 18-match win streak against CAA opponents was snapped. It was the longest streak by a CAA team since Towson's 21-match win streak from 2019-Spring 2021.Â
