Softball Projected First in CAA by D1Softball, Billie Kerwood Named Preseason Pitcher of the Year

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware's softball senior Billie Kerwood was named CAA Preseason Pitcher of the Year by D1Softball, the publication announced. The Blue Hens were also tabbed to finish first in the outlet's predicted order of finish.Â
Kerwood joined the Blue Hens in the offseason as a transfer from conference-rival Monmouth, where she pitched in three seasons with the Hawks.  For her career, she owns a 3.33 ERA in 443.1 innings with 459 strikeouts and 22 wins. She most recently pitched to a 3.26 ERA in 169.2 innings in 2024 with 167 strikeouts, 19 complete games, and three shutouts. She ranked third in the CAA and 25th nationally in complete games, third in the CAA and 49th nationally in strikeouts, fourth in the CAA and 23rd nationally in games started with 29, fourth in the CAA in innings pitched, and fifth in the CAA strikeout-to-walk ration at 2.61. In CAA play, she pitched to a 2.70 ERA and struck out 103 hitters in 103.2 innings. Kerwood shutout Big South Champion USC Upstate on Feb. 16, 2024, striking out nine and allowing just three hits and a walk. She also threw shutouts against Drexel and Hofstra in 2024.
As a sophomore in 2023, Kerwood led the CAA in strikeouts with 157 in 134 innings while pitching to a 3.03 ERA. She had a career-high 11 strikeouts during the Opening Day start against Siena where she allowed just two earned runs in 7.2 innings, then tied her career-high against Elon on March 19, 2023 during a five-inning start. In her first career start during her freshman season in 2022, she pitched a three-hit shutout against North Carolina. She was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team after having a 3.71 ERA with 135 strikeouts in 139.2 innings, including a 2.24 ERA in MAAC play.Â
D1 Softball predicted Delaware to finish first in the CAA standings, ahead of Stony Brook, Elon and UNCW. Mary Beth Cahalan, another transfer addition from Dartmouth, was picked first in their player rankings, while Morgan Hess was picked fourth. Sydney Shaffer (11), Kerwood (13), Chloe Blantz (14), and Katie Scheivert (18) were also in the listing's top 20.Â
