Five Goal Outburst Leads Ice Hockey to 5-3 Victory Over Lindenwood

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware ice hockey team exploded for a program-record five goals on Friday evening and came away with a 5-3 victory over Lindenwood University in a Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) contest at Fred Rust Ice Arena. With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improve to 2-13-0 overall and 1-8-0 in AHA play, while the Lions fall to 3-12-0, and 2-5-0 in conference action.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Kaitlin Finnegan scored two first period goals to lead the Blue Hens.
- Victoria Borg and Kacey Blum each scored their first collegiate goals.
- Meera Smith iced the victory with an empty-net tally and also added an assist for her first-career multi-point effort.
- Madison Bonavita and Eva Mayo each collected an assist for their first collegiate points, while Tiana McIntyre, Francesca Barresi and Katelyn Charlton all added helpers.
- Chalotte Payne made 32 saves in goal, including 19 in the third period for her second victory of the season.
- Delaware blocked 22 shots as a team, including eight by Lexie Lonask.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Finnegan opened the scoring 7:30 into the first period as, after shot attempts by Charlton and Barresi, she found a loose puck in the crease and buried it to give the Hens a 1-0 lead.
- With UD on the penalty kill late in the first period, Finnegan blocked a shot and won the race to the puck. She went in alone on net and beat the goalie up high with just 1.2 seconds left in the period for a 2-0 advantage.
- Lindenwood cut the lead to one in the second period, but Borg scored in the final minute of the frame on a centering pass from Smith to extend the lead back to two after 40 minutes.
- The Lions cut it to 3-2 early in the third, but Blum answered right back as she fired a high wrister past the goaltender 2:38 into the final period.
- Lindenwood again cut the lead to one, but Delaware's defense stood strong as the Lions played the final 2:33 with an extra attacker.
- Smith capitalized on a turnover to score an empty-netter with five seconds remaining to seal the win.
OF NOTE
- Finnegan's short-handed goal was the program's first-ever shorthanded tally.
- The win was Delaware's first-ever conference victory.
