Men's Basketball Earns First Win of the Season With 81-70 Victory Over Saint Peter's

NEWARK, Del - University of Delaware men's basketball earned its first win of the season by defeating Saint Peter's, 81-70, on Tuesday night at home. The Blue Hens improved to 1-3, while the Peacocks fell to 1-3. Delaware led wire-to-wire for the entirety of the game.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- In his Blue Hen debut, Justyn Fernandez scored 18 points while shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. He also contributed three steals.
- Macon Emory recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also shot 6-for-11 overall and made a pair of three-pointers.
- Tyler Houser turned in an efficient outing with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting, adding six rebounds.
- Christian Bliss filled up the box score with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
- Delaware shot 53.8 percent from the field and connected on 11 of its 21 three-point attempts (52.4 percent).
- UD committed just eight turnovers compared to 18 by Saint Peter's and outrebounded the Peacocks, 38-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware used its largest scoring run of the season to jump out to a 14–0 lead, with Fernandez scoring seven points during the stretch.
- Three-straight three-pointers by Emory, Ellison, and Brown pushed the advantage to 25–7 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
- The Blue Hens made 10 consecutive field goals and 13 of their final 15 attempts to close the half, stretching the lead from 16–5 to 49–26 at the break.
- Saint Peter's responded with a 16–2 run early in the second half to cut the deficit to 56-46. Back-to-back baskets from Houser pushed the lead back to 14, but the Peacocks answered with a layup and a three-pointer to pull within nine.
- Three-pointers by Houser and Bliss helped Delaware maintain an 11-point cushion. SPU trimmed the lead to 66-61 with 6:08 remaining, but Bliss scored on consecutive possessions to steady the Blue Hens, and free throws by Emory and Houser pushed the margin back to double figures.
- Delaware locked in defensively to close it out, holding Saint Peter's without a field goal for more than five minutes down the stretch. The Peacocks went 2-for-13 from the floor to end the game, while the Blue Hens made 11 of their final 14 free throws to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
- Delaware's 14-0 run was its largest scoring run of the season and UD's third run of at least 10-0 this season, also done against Bucknell and BYU.
- UD scored 49 first-half points, its most in any half this season and its most since scoring 53 second-half points on March 9, 2025, against William & Mary in the CAA Tournament. It also marked the most points Delaware has scored in the first half of a game since March 7, 2025 against Stony Brook, also in the CAA Tournament.
- The 26 points allowed by Delaware were its fewest in any half since giving up 23 to Chestnut Hill on Dec. 10, 2024, and its fewest in a first half since allowing 18 to Iona on Nov. 12, 2024.
- Fernandez's 18 points tied his career-high, last done on Feb. 1, 2023 against UMass.
- Emory recorded his third double-double of the season and of his career.
- Houser's 17 points were his most as a Blue Hen and his highest total since scoring 26 against Western Carolina on Feb. 25, 2023.
- Bliss, Emory, and Houser have each scored at least 10 points in all four games this season.
- Delaware has made 11 threes in back-to-back games. It's the first time Delaware made at least 11 three-pointers in two-straight games since doing so against William & Mary and Elon on Jan. 16 and 18, 2020.
