NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware ice hockey freshman Billi Roman was the recipient of the Student Leadership Award at the annual New Castle County Chamber of Commerce Women's Leadership Conference on Thursday afternoon. The event was held at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington.
Roman, who is in her freshman season for the Fightin' Blue Hens, is the third recipient of the Student Leadership Award. The award recognizes a student with leadership potential, dedication, and initiative who is committed to positively impacting their community. She was introduced by New Castle Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Yvonne Deadwyler.
"Billi is the only woman from Delaware playing Division I ice hockey," Deadwyler said in her introduction. "She has consistently demonstrated excellence, competing fiercely on the boys' team at The Tatnall School while maintaining distinguished academic honors. Billi embodies leadership through relentless dedication, athletic rigor, and the courage to carve her own path."
In its 35th year, the Women's Leadership Conference featured a trio of keynote speakers in the morning, including University of Delaware Interim President Dr. Laura Carlson. The nearly 600 guests then broke out into workshop breakout sessions before a luncheon and awards ceremony with a closing keynote address.
"This award represents something bigger than me - it represents the idea that leadership isn't about age or status," Roman said during her acceptance speech. "It's about choices, effort, and how you treat people. If I can inspire even one younger girl to believe she can lead too, that would mean the world to me."
