Federico Garbero, Tobey Lock, Euan Mackenzie, and Itamar Tapiro rank within the top 90 doubles pairs in the country
TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Delaware men's tennis student-athletes Federico Garbero, Tobey Lock, Euan Mackenzie, and Itamar Tapiro earned ITA National Doubles Rankings, the organization announced Tuesday.
They are the first athletes in program history to receive this honor. Lock and Mackenzie are ranked 35th, while Garbero and Tapiro received the No. 62 spot in the nation.
The four Fightin' Blue Hens played to a 14-1 total record during the fall tournament season.
Delaware is one of three teams in Conference USA to have doubles pairs ranked and are the only team to have multiple duos in the top 90.
The ITA ranks the top 90 doubles pairs based on a comprehensive evaluation of performance and competition level. Rankings consider a player's win-loss record, with greater emphasis on victories over higher-ranked opponents.
Strength of schedule is also a key factor, as wins against top-tier players carry more weight than those against unranked competitors. Additionally, head-to-head results play a significant role, ensuring that direct matchups between ranked players impact the standings.
In the fall, Lock and Mackenzie went 7-1 as a duo, winning the ITA Northeast Regionals and becoming the first doubles pair in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament. They rank second in program history with 42 wins as partners. Lock and
Mackenzie recorded wins over No. 45 Sebastian Sec and Meecah Bigun in the quarterfinals and No. 37 Sachin Palta and Thanaphat Boosarawongse of Columbia in the semifinals at the regional event.
Garbero and Tapiro became a doubles pair upon the former joining the Blue Hens after a season at UT-Arlington. They have played to a 7-0 record, including a win over Othman Bezzaz and Ernesto Ruy from Saint Joseph's, who rank 70th nationally and made the ITA East Sectional Tournament. Garbero and Tapiro also won the Crimson Doubles Draw while competing in the Saint Joseph's Invitational in October.
