Fernandez Scores Career-High in Men’s Basketball’s OT Loss at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – The University of Delaware men's basketball team dropped the Route 1 Rivalry match up at Delaware State, 75-72, on Saturday afternoon in overtime. The Fightin' Blue Hens fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Hornets improve to 3-8.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Justyn Fernandez recorded a career-high 23 points. He shot 50-percent from the field, including a career-tying 5-of-8 from three.
Macon Emory handed out a career-high six assists, as he led the team in assists for the first time this season.
Delaware was perfect from the free throw line for the first time since February 4, 2023 against Charleston. Christian Bliss made a career-high 9-of-9, Fernandez and Tyler Houser shot 2-of-2 for a total of 13-of-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Neither team established a significant run over the first 6:11 with the game knotted at eight apiece. The Hornets scored 12-unanswered points to pull ahead by nine and force a Martin Ingelsby timeout with DSU up 26-18 at the 4:29 mark. After another field goal by the home team, the Hens ripped off 10-consecutive points to tie the game at 28 heading into the locker room.
Delaware would go ahead by seven points at 44-37 before the Hornets rallied back to regain the lead 52-51 with 8:34 left. DSU extended its lead by as many as six, but the Hens went on a 6-0 run to take back the lead 59-58 with 3:04 on the clock. The remaining 13 points went back and forth, ending in a layup from Bliss to send the game into overtime with a score of 65-65.
The Hornets put up the first four points in OT before a pair of free throws from Bliss and a three pointer from Fernandez made it a one-point game with 1:31 to go. The scoring remained in DSU's favor for the remainder of the game for the Hornets to come out on top.

GAME NOTES

Bouna Kebe made his first-career start.
Delaware has had a different starting lineup in seven of eight games this season.
Nnanna Njoku made his Blue Hen debut.
Bliss has handed out at least four assists in every game this season.
